Sd card reader question

I have a rog ally and have never used an sd card in the unit. I just wondered can the reader fail if it has never had an sd card inserted. I don't want to use a card until problem is fixed but also don't want my card reader to fail and not be aware of it. Any one assist or know if it can fail without sd card. Thanks in advance.

We want to thank the community for the passionate response we've received for the ROG Ally. Your support has been both immense and invaluable, so we've been hard at work to improve a number of things. After confirmation from internal testing, under certain thermal stress conditions the SD card reader may malfunction.

If you are currently experiencing issues with your micro-SD card reader, please contact customer service for your region to RMA your unit, which we will inspect for any issues and repairs.

To speed up issue identification, please provide the product model, BIOS, and driver versions, along with the troubleshooting steps you've already tried to avoid redundant checks.

Am on my second Rog Ally and am not using the SD card reader on mine until ASUS have fixed the problem. To keep me extra safe i have set up manual fan curves that keep my temps under 80 degrees. Have a 18w and a 25w profile, never use the 30w turbo mode since that gives me thermals of above 90 degree.

Think it's better to be safe then having to swap for a third Rog Ally. Am using a 1 TB external SSD for expendable storage that have transfer speeds way above SD card levels. Am using the Kingston xs2000, it's super light (100g), tiny and comes with a short usb C to usb C cable. Have just mounted mine on the back of the Rog Ally with double sided tape. Am also using a USB-C to 2x USB-C adapter so that I can have both ssd drive and power connected at once.
