Hello everyone! I am writing this post, hoping to get yours and ASUS's attention on an issue that has surfaced with the most recent GPU Drivers for the ROG Ally and Ally X, V32.0.12011.7001. This issue involves using the handheld with and eGPU connected specifically when only using the handheld's onboard screen and no external screen. Most games with some exceptions it seems, will refuse to run and give an error like "Graphics failed to initialize". The cause of the issue lies within the newest driver, V32.0.12011.7001, and having the handheld's VRAM set to 8GB or more. Any VRAM allocation below 8GB or on Auto, the issue doesn't arise. This has been tested with both the original Ally and the X, along with the Lenovo Legion Go and different eGPU docks and GPUs, and finally different GPU drivers. The issue only exists on the original Ally and the X with the latest official ASUS GPU driver, V32.0.12011.7001. The type of eGPU dock and GPU does not matter. Also, this issue does not exist on the previous driver, V32.0.11021.3002.
I know people will say, "Then why don't you set the VRAM to below 8GB or Auto?" or "Just roll back the drivers!". This is not acceptable for users to not have a seamless experience when wanting to get the most out of their device. If a user usually plays in handheld mode with 8GB of VRAM, this would involve needing to switch that allocation and restart the device when they want to connect an eGPU, then doing it all over again when they want to go back to just the handheld. The other option would be even more complicated for those who have no idea what the process of rolling back drivers involves.
If you have made it this far, please help bring awareness to this so that it may be fixed as soon as possible.
