ROG Ally SD Card Reader Not In Devices

Bloombud

The SD Card Reader Hardware isn't even showing up in my devices list when trying to look into updating/reinstalling drivers.  I just bought a microsd card today to try and add storage for more games, and come to see that on my Ally it seems the hardware isn't even connected/showing up at all.  Help.

I have a SanDisk Exteme 512GB A2, it worked fine on the ROG Ally until recently. The card work on the Switch, on my 2 Laptops (Asus Tuf Gaming and Gygabyte Aero) and even on The ROG Ally but via a USB-C SD card reader plug in it.

But it doesn't work in the SD card slot and the other cards I test, which aren't SanDisk, work fine in the ROG Ally. I don't know why, but it's not a problem with overheating or a hardware problem. Any update to fix that soon ?   Ps : sorry for the english, i'm french.

Hi @Restiger666@IIBOROG ,

Regarding the issue of the SD card being unable to be read, please refer to the previous information:
"If you are currently experiencing issues with your micro-SD card reader, please contact customer service for your region to RMA your unit, which we will inspect for any issues and repairs."

Due to the regional holidays, my responses may be slightly delayed.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding 🙂

I have the same problem. I had my micro SD card just for the ally, and has always worked fine. I use the card for some retro game. On top of it I never let the device run hot. Yesterday I popped the card in and is not even show up on the device list. Usually the ally forse a pop up sound when inserting the card. But not even that. I don't know how to solve the problem.

It's absurd... The Ally's microSD card reader basically self-destructs somehow. Most seem to attribute this to overheating (basically cooking itself up), but there are some conflicting voices. The frustrating bit is that, despite thousands of early adopters having the same issue, ASUS does not share diagnostic information, no doubt to avoid liability. Furthermore, the barrier to send it back for repairs is so high (customer support told me I was looking at a minimum of 5 weeks, notwithstanding the hassle!) that they probably calculate most of us won't bother. This is after all a "minor" component that only comes very handy once in a while to transfer content. One more dent in the company's battered reputation...

I still have not received any private messages from you. Please refrain from spamming the forum further since you have NOT received a serviced unit that has failed again.

I do have have problems receiving PMs from other forum members. You may send a PM to another moderator and let me know who. I understand this is a frustrating situation, but persistence to spam flaming posts will result in a ban. Also keep in mind that messages and post may be blocked by the system due to profanity, and therefore nobody is responding or receiving them from you.

I have just stated very clearly that I am not aware of anyone who has problems sending PMs. Were you able to send your info to any other moderators? Or are they all undeliverable?

Not having issues receiving PMs from anyone else means that it is highly-improbably that only one person in the forum is having an issue. However, if that is the case, then please do as suggested, try another moderator. Thanks.

Let's not get bogged down with who complained to whom about what. The lack of transparency from ASUS is a large part of the problem. There have been countless reports of microSD card malfunction since launch, far too many to be explained by some randomly occurring fault. Something systemic is happening here: either it is a design flaw, or ASUS has sourced this particular part from a disreputable subcontractor. Either way, some sort of explanation to early adopters is long overdue. Before I even consider sending my unit back for repairs (which would be a *huge* inconvenience), I want to know that they are not going to replace the microSD card reader with another one of the same model (if it is a hardware problem). And if it is a design flaw, then there is really no point is there? A small compensation (even in the form of a discount voucher) or at the very least an apology would be welcome.
