Issues Restoring ROG Ally Z1 Extreme – RAM Error, Driver Problems, Power Plans Missing & Rec. Part.

Hi everyone,

I'm having multiple issues trying to restore my ROG Ally Z1 Extreme from the cloud.

1. RAM Error During Restore

Each time I try restoring from the cloud, I repeatedly get the error: "The instruction at 0x00007FF... referenced memory at 0x0000000000000024. The memory could not be written.". After a clean installation, I updated all drivers, but I suspect the issue might be related to the GPU driver – specifically the hotfix version V31.0.22017.3004.

2. Button Mapping Not Working Properly

After restoring from the cloud, the button behavior changed. For example, when I launch Steam and press the Xbox-configured button, it opens both the Steam menu and the Xbox Game Bar. It should only open Steam. The Game Bar should be tied to a different shortcut. Reinstalling ASUS services and software didn’t fix this.

3. BSODs & Clean Windows Install

I encountered several BSODs after the cloud restore (some kernel-related), so I decided to install a clean copy of Windows directly from Microsoft. I then installed ASUS drivers and software manually – except for the GPU driver, which seems problematic.

However, even with everything installed from the ASUS support page, I noticed power plans are missing – I only see the default Windows plans, not the custom ones that came with the device at launch.

4. Recovery Image Issues

I have a backup system image that I saved in case of issues like this. When I restored it, everything seemed okay – except that MyASUS in Windows Recovery mode doesn't work. It asks me to use the Windows recovery environment, but it seems like that recovery partition is no longer accessible.

Why was this recovery partition disabled or blocked? What’s the reason behind this?

Why is it so difficult to restore the ROG Ally to its original factory state?

Would appreciate any help or official response. Thanks!

Regarding the memory error notification that appears after installing the system via Cloud Recovery, this error is caused by an anomaly in the cloud files provided by Microsoft. We have requested further fixes from Microsoft. This error has been tested and does not affect usage. Please click "OK" to continue and ignore this error message.

Regarding the issue with button mapping not working properly, as we are unsure of your usage scenario (Control mode and MCU version), please try disabling the setting in the red box in the image below to see if there is any improvement.

Additionally, after reinstalling the system, please update all pending items through MyASUS and Armoury Crate SE and then test if the issue has improved. Thank you.

To speed up issue identification, please provide the product model, BIOS, and driver versions, along with the troubleshooting steps you've already tried to avoid redundant checks.
