Asus Ally / X Cardinal Axes Snapping

JorgiBob
Level 7

The joysticks on the Ally X (and seemingly the original Ally) snap or sticks to the cardinal axes as you move the joystick around; it's not a problem for most games, but creates unsmooth motion in games requiring fine movements such as FPS games. The behavior can be easily observed in both the Armory Crate tool and at the hardwareetester website (https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad) by slowly moving the joystick in circles. The snapping occurs both on the original sticks and aftermarket hall effect / TMR (HandheldDIY) sticks - even when the deadzone setting is set to 0 and the response setting is set to the default linear curve; modifying the deadzone and response curve exacerbates the behavior and increases the "magnetism" of the axes.

There are numerous threads on both these forums and reddit complaining about this behavior:

Overall it's a great handheld, but it's annoying enough that I don't play FPS games without a third party controller (it doesn't occur on both the Xbox and PS5 controllers).

Is this something Asus can look into?

Thanks!

Asus, please release a firmware/driver fix/patch for this horrible problem. Not a hardware issue because i've already tried changing Hall Effect joystick modules and issue is still there. I've connected an 8bitdo controller and it does not do this at all (no snapping to X/Y), so it's not a Windows
