GTX 660 Ti FPS bottleneck?

You can see my specs in my signature. I have my cpu at 4.6GHz using the Asus CPU level up software. It changes the BIOS for you and seems to be stable and this is week 3 on this setting. I have never messed done any in depth overclocking, would like to learn, but for now figured this was better than nothing. I use GPUTweak and set it to game mose before playing. Have any idea what would be bottlenecking my fps? Running in 1366x768 I should have no problem playing just about anything on at least high setting, if not ultra, but I seem to be having some trouble. I was maxing out at 60 fps no matter what settings I tried. I updated my Vcard bios and ran RefreshForce. I can now reach as high as 170fps, which is great, but it did not eliminate lag and I wasn't able to up my video quality by very much at all. I don't understand where my hold up is, but something is wrong. Any ideas?

60fps might be the limit of the monitor? I've noticed some games/apps where it limits it to 60fps.

I have a LCD 19" I could try it on, but I hate to give up my 32". I do have VSync off in both places and was still only getting 60fps until I ran refreshforce. Like I said, now I am getting as high as 170fps. It does good half the time, but then it drops down to 19-20fps often enough to ruin the gameplay. Will afterburner work right with my asus vcard? I have been playin around with some OC settings and have raised the fps by 4-5 benchmarking, so I am gonna go do a test run. What about CPU level up? Is it as good as a true OC? It is at the bios level, but what is the difference, if any?

Yes completely remove CPU level up, and use default settings from BIOS. MSI afterburner works in every cards. If you need help with overclocking manually create a new thread and I'm sure many of them will help you to overclock the i5 3570k with the V Formula :D. It should be CPU level up causing your stability problem. Oh and I never heard of refreshforce I'm gonna look at that 😄

Edit: One last thing did you overclock your GPU as well? This also might causing your stability problem, try going back to defualt settings by using MSI afterburner. Then if you want to overclock try going up little baby steps first.

I am going to remove the level up now. refreshforce moved me in the right direction, but not quite enough. I just got done OCing my vcard and have improved my avg fps by 15-20 and it seems to be a bit more stable, but still not quite there. Hopefully removing level up will finish it off.

Nice! will wait for your next post. Don't forget to set the BIOS to default and change your RAM settings to 1600mhz when you uninstalled CPU level up. Is your monitor is playing at 30hz? If you still having issues I still recommend to get an higher resolution monitor (1680x1050 or higher) at least with 60hz-75hz.

One more thing increasing or deceasing refresh rate doesn't increase FPS only you can see how smooth while the pixels (moving images) are moving, well that's how I see it. Also high-end video cards prefer to use higher-resolution which uses allot more power on the video card. Lower resolution does increase FPS but for an higher end video card it decreases and you will be amazed when it plays on higher resolution it increases FPS and you shouldn't see any FPS drops while getting a new monitor.

Vsync is the one that use only 60 FPS - max, If you have in NVIDIA settings or in game settings make sure to turn off Vsync on both of them. I don't know what you meant why you still have lag? does it drop under 30 FPS?

The hold up might be your monitor the higher end video card won't use much power on low resolution screen. I have an GTX 560 TI with an 1024x768 monitor and I feel it was jittery while playing, then I bought the 1680x1650 monitor and the video card played much better and I finally see that my GPU was using more power on the bigger resolution. Uninstall GPU tweak completely and use MSI afterburner which is the same but its more stable than GPU tweak.

My guess will be, make sure to turn of Vysnc on NVIDIA settings and on game settings or try using a bigger monitor (1680x1050 and up).

Edit: I just read your first sentence about using an software to overclock the CPU... I wouldn't go that direction to overclock your CPU, it can be harmful (high voltages) or showing bad stability. You have to do it manually, first of all uninstall the software and go to BIOS and use default settings and don't forget to change the RAM timings on BIOS.

Lets worry more about the lag stability you are having, then others will help you how to overclock on that motherboard. Trust them there are lots of experts on this forums 😄

I am running at 60hz already... I removed the level up and re-entered all of my memory speeds and timings. The frame rates aren't any higher, but it is smoother. That wasn't a total fix, but it was another step in the right direction. Not sure what else there is to do other than OC. I still have my settings turned down pretty low. I am gonna crank it up a bit and see what happens.

I have it playing on some decent settings now. AA and AF are set mid way and my texture and shadow details are on high. I turned VSyinc on and OCed my videocard to; Core V +12, Power - max, Core Clock +80, Mem Clock +250. It would hold right at 140 fps withoout vsync but was having some slicing every now and then, I have only ran it cfor appx 5 minutes with these settings, but from what I can tell it is working allot better. Do you think overclocking the cpu would make additional improvements?

Glad to hear!

Just want to clear some things...

What game or benchmark you use to see your min-average-max FPS? 140 FPS is allot you should be very happy you shouldn't go any higher. Slicing? Do you mean in some parts of the game or bench marking like stressing the GPU that is quite normal you can't have 140 FPS most of the time. I've always liked to play at 60 FPS constant because you really don't need to go higher unless if you want an monitor that supports a very higher refresh rate, you will see allot of difference.

Yes overclocking the CPU should help increase the minimum FPS you get a little or more increase of FPS. For example I use ALLBenchmark its a application you can download for free, there is a part where they do a physic test with your CPU. The test was a building falling down, I have my CPU at 3.33ghz and the average FPS was at very low 10-20 FPS, when I overclock the CPU to 4.5ghz now I get 30-40 FPS which is huge improvement for the minimum of FPS.

Again I will try to find a thread to overclock your CPU with that Mobo.
Hope I helped 🙂

Edit: Here it is: http://rog.asus.com/184142012/maximus-v-motherboards/guide-overclocking-the-core-i5-3570k-to-4-5ghz-...

Its on the GENE but the formula should have the exact settings as the GENE. Also remember every game or benchamrk always have different results because they have different engines, and benchmark settings.
