ROG Strix GS BE18000 bottleneck

Just brought the GS BE18000 and I am having issues with the Lan/Wan preformace. I have a 2.5G DL/UL ISP, I went into the router‘s GUI - QOS - speed test and I got consistent results of 1.6 DL/UL speed… I tried the same test with my old Asus AX86U ans AX86U Pro with the same ISP, same cables and everything, the results were solid at 2.4G DL/UL. The internet speed test in my Xbox SX showed 9xx DL and around 3xx UL speed when connected to the GS BE18000 but if I connect the Xbox to my ISP modem directly,  the same test showed result of 9xx UL (about the same) and back up to 9xx UL speed. My laptop connected to the GS BE18000 got speed of around 2G DL/UL and when connected to the ISP modem directly, speed are back up to 2.4G DL/UL. Tried using my AX86U and AX86U Pro to do all the same tests and the speeds were excellent with no issues at all. For some reason the GS BE18000 keeps lowering my speeds, updated the lastest firmware, restored factory reset, tried different cables, turned off QOS/AIprotection with no help. Anyone have the same problem with the Lan/Wan connection speed? At least with the internal speed test in the GS BE18000 GUI? THX 🙏🙏

Hi, and welcome (back) to the ROG forums.

I believe you are in HK/China based on SNBForum posts under the same member ID?   Hopefully someone with a multi-Gig ISP AND experience with this router lurks here, but it is low likelihood.  I do know Dong has tested this router (for a couple of months).  I also know he has Sonic ISP which is VERY FAST, like 8 - 10 Gbps fast, so any questions/concerns he's probably your best bet to have an answer for you.

A couple of notes after reading (most of) his article:

  1. He's here in Northern California (silicone valley I believe).  The US has the least stringent WiFi rules.  FCC:  < 30 dBm for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz.  AFC changes 6 GHz power here.  From my research where you are in HK/China seems to follow CE rules which vary but are less than the FCC I listed.
  2. Gaming ports are specific ports (I think 4 and 5 or 5 and 6).  Sometimes Ethernet switches are limited to the slowest device.  So if you have a mix of 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps strangely they'll be all capped at 1 Gbps.
  3. USB noise on WiFi.  I still haven't sorted this out I just unplug and discontinue use once I catch this.
  4. Noise from UPS/battery backup.  I still haven't sorted this out.  On WiFi speed test this can be seen by an initial burst of high throughput immediately followed by the needle rapidly turning counterclockwise (speed dropping) and latency increasing...

Ask Dong he's a nice guy...

Thx for the reply, I do not have the chance to test the Wi-Fi of this router, still dealing with my issues on the Wan/Lan side….. just that I tried using the AX86U, AX86U Pro and directly connect to my ISP modem all speeds are great and consistent. Using this GS BE18000, all speeds were degraded…. The sad thing is that ASU’S technical supportwere useless…….

It's difficult to compare the RT-AX86U or the RT-AX86U Pro because (at least I am assuming you mean these models?  I have a RT-AX86U).  They have a single 2.5 Gb Ethernet port, whereas the GS-BE18000 has all 2.5 Gb Ethernet ports.  I also do not have ISP service above 1 Gbps available here...

It's a bummer that support wasn't helpful.  Over here when I contacted them in the past it seemed to be a language/communication issue.

That said for testing purposes only I'd only connect 2.5 Gb Ethernet (or higher) devices to the router while testing speed.  I have seen mixed connections capped at the lowest device speed on Ethernet switches, so I hope to rule that out.  Also try the Game specific ports for your gaming devices/PCs...

This is a fiber connection?  (Which ISP if you don't mind sharing)?  Is it PPPoE?  What is the ISP provided modem model?  Are you connecting the GS-BE18000 to the modem or directly to the ONT?

Seems like the iPad speed is okay as upload is actually higher on the GS-BE18000 vs ISP modem...

Yes fiber 2.5 G up/down and the brand is Netvigator HK automatic IP addres. GS BE18000 is connected directly to a HUAWEI modem provided by the ISP. And the Ipad speed is actually slower since the DL speed is 400Mbps slower… Speeds are always slower whenever there is the GS BE18000 in the connection… Given the price of the GS BE18000, totally not acceptable!

I found out within the last year that fiber connections are actually shared like cable modem, so the dip in download speed is possible with high traffic periods.  (This is typically in the evening after people come home from work).  The Huawei modem/gateway use is required by Netvigator?  Can you connect the GS-BE18000 directly to the ONT at least for testing?  When you connect to the Huawei is it set to Bridge mode/IP Passthrough?  (Please share the model as I would like to research/Google search about it and your issue if someone else has reported ASUS router issues with your service).

A PC bottleneck calculator helps you identify if one component of your system, such as the CPU or GPU, is limiting overall performance. By running a bottleneck test, you can see whether your hardware parts are balanced or if an upgrade is needed.
