Last update for GT-AC5300 was: 2021/05/07 => 3.0.0.4.386.42643.

Is it really dead? ;(

bro, I am not too sure, but there is not even security update since May 2021. I hope it will not EOL too soon. As compared to it successor AX11000 in a way, it quite stable even I am upgrade my main router to AX11000, It served as a AI mesh in my environment even though without wifi 6.

I just talked to the distributor and was told GT-RT5300 no more in production. But having said that it may still not sure if the continuality of security update or future firmware upgrade still carry out.

In my opinion, 5300 performing well and stable for wired connection and quite stable in wireless performances (As AI Mesh) in certain degree. some may differ my opinion but I will still keep it in my setup for a longer while more.

The best router without an upgrade. You can see ASUS does not care about the owners of flagship models.

A sad subject, you might say.

I also was and still am happy with the performance of the GT-AC5300.
It's a shame it was dropped, the lack of Asuswrt-Merlin support doesn't help either.
In theory there is talk of the beginnings of support in OpenWRT => https://openwrt.org/toh/start?dataflt%5BModel*%7E%5D=gt-ac5300 but I'm far from calling it "working".

I, too, plan to switch to the GT-AX11000 (still supported, last FW/BIOS from today! 3.0.0.4.386.45934 2021/11/10 , also with support in CFW - Asuswrt-Merlin).

Thank you for your feedback.

Bro, not so sure if Asuswrt-Merlin still provide the support it aftermath . As far as I known, Asus may stop the production or EOL their product, it will still support the it till a point they call end of support which pronounce the end of the product cycle. Hope Asus will maintain the providing backend support such as FW, security update to this great product. Correct me if I was wrong, the fundamental of AX11000 was an upgrade version of 5300 basic. Likewise to AXE111000.

Let's look at it from this side: first OFW update for GT-AC5300 was 3.0.0.4.384.21140 2018/07/10 last was 3.0.0.4.386.42643 2021/05/07, which is almost 3 years of support.

On the other hand ASUSWRT-MERLIN supports (Last update: 04-Aug-2021.):
RT-AC68U => last OFW update: 2021/10/14
RT-AC88U => last OFW update: 2021/10/21
RT-AC3100 => last OFW update: 2021/05/18
RT-AC5300 => last OFW update: 2021/06/11
RT-AC86U => last OFW update: 2021/07/14
RT-AX56U => last OFW update: 2019/11/05
RT-AX58U => last OFW update: 2021/01/21
RT-AX86U => last OFW update: 2021/10/14
RT-AX88U => last OFW update: 2021/10/21
GT-AC2900 => last OFW update: 2021/04/28
GT-AX11000 => last OFW update: 2021/11/10
RT-AX68U => last OFW update: 2021/10/25

Sadly, you may be right, but the example of the RT-AX56U gives hope for at least some updates from Merlin after the last OFW Update from Asus itself.

I see the AX11000 as a natural extension of the GT-AC5300 line, similarly the AXE11000 as a variation on the AX11000.

Well there is nothing left to do but wait for the package with GT-AX11000 and enjoy the new hardware.

Look as if we have to live with it. AXE11000 not getting any popularity in my region where I live. As far as I know thru my friend using the AXE 11000 build in fan noise quite annoying when it located in the bedroom. Let hope Asus will put in some extra life span to the GT-AC 5300 for another 2-3 years.

PS: Sorry for the wrong model stated above. Actual version was RT-AX89X.

offtopic:

"(...) AXE 11000 build in fan noise (...)" it's something new to me, I was convinced that this model is passively cooled => https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/33226-wi-fi-6e-preview-with-asus-gt-axe110...
