GT-BE98 incorrect password error

I have the same issue as described here: GT-BE98 6GHz issues - Republic of Gamers Forum - 1013919 (asus.com) (unfortunately this is closed, however, none of the possible solutions there worked).

In short: All devices will show incorrect password (I did not change the password and the devices were logged in properly just before). In the settings the correct password is displayed.

I tried restarting the router, reflash it with the latest firmware and resetting, but nothing works. The guest networks always works, there is no incorrect password error.

Same issue here: Asus GT-BE98 Forgets Wifi Password (except guest) | SNBForums

And also here: ASUS GT-BE98 forgets WIFI password (700$ router does not work properly) : r/ASUS (reddit.com)

Is there any fix?

Update 24/08/15: 😱

  • I can reproduce the problem by rebooting the router. Everytime I reboot the router all connected devices will show the incorrect password error. I can then temporarely fix it by >Wireless>General, click "WPA Pre-Shared Key" (that still shows the correct password that I initially set), delete the password, re-enter the identical password and click "Apply"
  • The problem occurs with both, Smart Connect enabled or disabled
  • I do not use WiFi7 or MLO
  • Resetting the router did not solve the problem

Both of you also need to keep in mind, some of these settings are not independent.  If you make a change, such as MLO or Smart Connect, it may be resetting such things as passwords.

I suggest, you reconfigure the router.  Initially, it asks for a Wi-Fi 7 SSID and Password.  You might try doing just that and leave it alone for a few days.  I would not even try to set up an IoT SSID.  The initial SSID does not need to be related to MLO, but just a normal SSID.  You can set up the MLO SSID later using a different SSID but the same password.

If you make any changes, make note of the exact time, in case log entries are made which could be checked.

I do not use MLO. I resetted the router three times and I always get the same error. I can reproduce the error by rebooting the router. The passwords in >Wireless>General never change when the problem occurs.

If you are rebooting and checking the log, make note while the router is rebooting, the time/date is from an earlier period and not current.  When the router is finished rebooting, the time and date go back to actual.

OK. And what should I do with this now? How does that belp to solve the problem?

Well, since what you are seeing is not normal and I have only seen this one situation, I would suggest getting ASUS to swap out the box.

The info on rebooting is just if you choose to try that.  But if you submit a log, you could start with the reboot section.

The BE98s received firmware on a different schedule than the Pro version.  It is too bad that some folks with the 98 version don't seem to be involved, just in case the 98 Pros were different in this regard.

@FNU0180 @Sturmrider  This seems to be a bug that occurs with increasing the number of Guest/IoT networks.  I'm afraid I simply had at peak maximum of one IoT network.  Currently I have 2.4 and 5 GHz SmartConnected and 6-GHz-1 WiFi 7 OFF, 6 GHz-2 WiFi 7 ON.  All share the exact same SSID and password.  I no longer have MLO enabled I felt it was a waste of bandwidth for a single WiFi 7 phone which actually showed negative benefit when connected to the MLO specific SSID.

I have the same problem, wrong password via WebGui. But the Asus Router App still working. Maybe a firmware issue. Waiting for the next firmware....

I'm afraid there are two different passwords of concern:

Your problem seems to be when you open 192.168.50.1 in a web browser and try to log into the router ASUSwrt/Web GUI.

WPA is with respect to connecting to WiFi:  2.4 GHz, 5 GHz-1, 5 GHz-2, 6 GHz (GT-BE98) ; 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 6 GHz-1, 6 GHz-2 (GT-BE98 Pro).
