Welcome to ASUS Router
HTTPS is a relatively more secured web access protocol. We strongly suggest to enter the ASUS router setting page via HTTPS protocol. Please download certificate and install it to "Trusted Root Certification Authorization" store.

What is this new stuff and why I can't just log in to my router?
click click click click just to get into MY router from MY pc

Install certificate does nothing.............

If that router is like mine, the default setting is to use the Https: option.  I do not remember if it also checked the do both options.  If it did, you should see something on the page that would allow you to log on with that version.

If you do not see such an option, then you may need to reset the router and set it up again.

If you want to use the https version, the certificate has to be the same version as the one you added to the Trusted Root Certificate section.  There are how-to instructions online if you want to find one of those.

The have changed the configuration of those Certificate buttons so hopefully they cleaned up that process.

Are you trying the old router.asus.com or the newer/proper asusrouter.com?

https://www.asusrouter.com:8443 or if you've changed the port # change the 8443 part.  Try that site, login, download the root certificate cert.crt file and install as instructed:

https://www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1034294/

If you use DDNS to access the router from away (WAN side)?  Then it is different...

I use IP address 192.168.x.x which defaults to http://192.168.x.x gets

Try https://192.168.x.x does nothing

asusrouter.com does also nothing.

Yes,using DDNS which is using 8443 so have changed LAN port to 844x,which may have solved it,need to reboot to test etc

I was running an ExpertWiFi EBG15 router as router for a little while the last couple of weeks.  I was not able to figure out why I could not get a secure connection to the router via LAN with DDNS/Let's Encrypt.....

Ahh, for https://192.168.x.x please add the port number as such https://192.168.x.x:8443 or whatever you changed it to...

@Indigian Merlin current firmware for the GT-AXE16000 has a higher GPL integration level.  I suggest switching (back) to it...

Even though Merlins released in August and Asus FW released end of October?

Yes, per the Merlin Changelog for 3006 (EDIT) For WiFi 7 all ASUSwrt (official) are higher GPL so I run that...:

 - UPDATED: Merged GPL 3006.102_37957 for Wifi 6 devices.

May have to reflash Merlin then....

Will it have the latest asus updates though?

Seems the certificate isn't valid for the LAN address only for the DDNS address.

Can get past the asus router page but stops at the

Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead

Apparently cannot use 2 certificates?

Did you see the note that I caught you trying https://192.168.x.x without the port number?  https://192.168.x.x:8443
