ASUS GT-98 Wi-Fi connection problem with older devices (2.4ghz) Solved

I just purchased the GT98 and was setting up all my smart devices and all was good until I got to my smart light bulbs. I know these use 2.4ghz band so kept trying different channels but they just wouldn’t connect. I tried connecting my old net gear range extender and the bulbs connected via that to router ok. I thought  there must be a way to connect them without the Netgear extender. I fiddled with loads of settings and finally found the answer. Go to Advanced setting > Wireless > Professional and then set the band to 2.4ghz and then scroll to bottom until you find WiFi 7 OFDMA and disable it and also the one below WiFi 7 MU_MIMO and disable it.  Then apply changes. I am having no problems at all now with older WiFi devices.

If you are referring to the BE98 Pro, older devices may have problems related to WPA security levels.  The latest firmware just restored being able to set a lower level such as WPA/WPA2-Personal for IoT devices.

I have the BE98 with single 6 ghz band as I am in UK. Yes I tried all that as that’s only advice I could find when searching internet. Router updates firmware when setting up. Set to WPA as oldest standard and nope won’t connect. Soon as I changed the two Wi-Fi 7 settings for the 2.4 ghz band only everything started working. I just tried turning the settings back on guess what? Yep all my older devices disconnected.

I believe it started with 6e that WPA3 was the only security allowed, to use the 6 GHz band, (either that or "Enhanced Open", which we probably all understand as unsecure).

So likely (I suspect) is when you select the WPA2 and even WPA you are automatically disabling WiFi 7.  Or those two WiFi 7 OFDMA settings are being automatically turned off, and you are no longer on 2.4 GHz with WiFi 7.

It's interesting on researching the competitor Netgear Orbi 970 the 2.4 GHz channel is specifically WiFi 6, not WiFi 7, probably for simplicity of compatibility.
