Asus AXE16000 upload speeds are slow/unstable wired & wireless

Hi all,

I am having an issue with my new Asus AXE16000 gaming router. I had zero issues with it the first couple of months, but as of late I am getting unstable upload speeds. I started to notice it when I was attempting some online gaming sessions. Ricket League in particular was showing constant packet loss issues.

I then ran a speed test, and noticed that my upload speed (which is suppose to be 50 up) was running anywhere between 8 up and 37 up. I never get the full speed, and the speeds I do get are constantly fluctuating, sometimes the average is as low as 17 up.

I have the latest firmware installed, I have done multiple power cycles of my ISP modem AND the router itself, and I recently did a factory reset of the router, followed by a 5 mins power cycle. The speeds are still unstable.

I am doing most my testing on a hardwired desktop PC, but the upload speeds are also slow on a wifi6 5ghz connection. I am right by the router, and never had issues getting the full up and download speeds over my wifi connection on my smart phone, even when I was away from the router.

I even skipped the router entirely and went directly to my cable modem, and the speeds are a stable 50 up. As soon as I go back to the Asus Router, they drop to at least 30 up and then it's hit or miss on if they get slower. I have tried switching ports, I have tried restarts, factory resets, different cables.

This issue has been on and off again through out the last couple weeks. I used the Asus mobile phone app to set everything up every single time, so it does the self optimizing settings. I read that the QOS settings can cause this, but that option is turned off and I have never used it.

I just spent over $400 on this router.... I'd like to  figure out why this issue has popped up all of a sudden.

Another member here @Saltgrass and I have had this router model since 2022...

It originally had 3.0.0.4.388_xxxxx firmware.  When ASUS had ambitious plans to switch to ASUSwrt 5.0 this was one of the first to receive beta firmware.  And strangely, it was a nightmare on Ethernet.  If you look carefully at the series, there's a 3.0.0.6.102_36382 and then a little less than a month later 3.0.0.6.102_36383.  It was having trouble right up to that _36383 firmware.

You've hit the usual concerns of factory resetting, rebooting modem and router, disabling QoS...

I have been switching between Merlin and ASUSwrt depending on GPL, and right now Merlin is on _39099.  Being the higher of the two currently, that's what I have installed.  I have no idea whether that is the solution to be honest, but might be worth a shot.

I am not much of a network guy. I know the basics of plugging it in, setting it up, ect. I am not sure what you mean with the switching between Merlin and ASUSwurt. I just know this issue was a recent one, and my upload speeds are unstable recently.

When you pay this kind of money for a router, you expect it to work properly. And now the return window has passed, so I am stuck with it.

I just upgraded the firmware with Merlin.... issue is still there.

Just wondering, are we looking at 50 Mbps?  If so, what type of service is it?

Are you using all the devices your ISP gave you.? You have a modem but not any type of gateway?

If the speed is normal when you go straight to your computer, perhaps the router is not picking up the correct type of service.

Maybe/Hopefully @Saltgrass and/or others may have some insight on how to get this resolved...

What is the ISP?

May try cloning the PC MAC address onto the router and see...

Service is Breezeline cable. 500 down and 50 up. I had zero issues for weeks, then all of a sudden this upload issue has started to occur the past couple days, making packet loss happen when trying to game.

When i hard wire my PC directl to the Breezline modem, I have no issues with the upload speed. If I hard wire to the ASUS router, which is connected to the Breezline modem, the upload speed becomes unstable.

All there is from Breezeline is a Modem with 4 either net ports and phone jacks for the VIOP phone service. No other equipment.

Okay...

What port are you using on the GT-AXE16000, meaning is it a 10 Gb Ethernet port?  Is it the same speed as the port on the modem?  (I have an inkling it might be a bad cable)...

The modem is a standard 1Gb port and I have a cat7 cable going from the modem's number 1 port to the 2.5/1Gb port on the AXE-16000
