Strix G16-G614JVR Out of the Box Power Problem

Level 13

I changed my laptop from a ROG G16 G614JV 2023 i7-13560HX to the G16-G614JVR 2024 i9-14900HX. My problem is that the charger for the 2024 model CANNOT provide the power needed for the laptop to function properly. The issue arises when I play games—my GPU uses around 80-100 watts, and my CPU uses almost the same, 80 to 100 watts. That totals around 180 watts of power usage. The maximum power consumption of the laptop can be 280 watts, and the charger should be able to provide that. However, when I play games, the laptop still drains the battery and CANNOT get the watts needed to operate normally. The maximum power the charger provides to the laptop is 180 watts. If I want to play games and charge the laptop at the same time, I can't. Even when I play and the laptop uses more than 180 watts, it starts drawing power from the battery. After a short while, the laptop automatically reduces the CPU power usage to around 50 watts and starts charging itself with 30 watts. This results in around 180 watts of total power being supplied to the laptop: ~100 watts for the GPU, ~50 watts for the CPU (after dropping from ~90), and ~30 watts for charging the battery, totaling ~180 watts. The problem is that when the CPU drops from 90 watts to 40-50, I experience FPS drops, which is very annoying. For example, my old laptop with an RTX 4060 and i7-13650 was able to use 180-200 watts of power and still had ~80 watts left to charge the laptop if needed. However, the issue isn't that I want to charge the laptop while playing. The issue is that when the charger can't provide more than 180 watts, my CPU reduces its power consumption, drains the battery, and causes FPS drops due to this short power limit.

The things I've tried to fix this problem are – everything. I tried every BIOS from 306 to 317, fresh Windows installation, updated drivers, power plan optimizations, removed throttle limits, undervolting. The only thing I haven't tried is getting a new charger. But why should I change the charger when the laptop was bought just a week ago?

Can someone from the ASUS team explain where the problem might be? Is it the charger, or is the laptop somehow limited by ASUS to prevent damage? I want to mention again that I NEVER experienced such a problem with my old ROG Strix G16 2023 (G614JV).

I apologize for the late reply. Please download HWinfo and start logging before playing the game. Additionally, record a video demonstrating the issue of CPU and GPU power consumption decreasing, which leads to FPS drops when using the original power supply during gameplay. Please send the following information via private message, and I will ask the technical team for further analysis and confirmation. Thank you.

  • Serial Number:
  • BIOS Version:
  • Windows Build Version: (Settings - System - About)
  • dGPU Driver Version:
  • Game Name where FPS drops occur:
  • Are there any external monitors or other devices connected?:
  • Have you installed or replaced any SSD/RAM?:
  • GPU and Fan Settings in Armoury Crate:
  • Armoury Crate > Settings > About > Service Version > Check Button (Copy all content):

Hello no problem for the late reply. I send back the laptop and change it becouse the problem was something like a power problem i always use HWinfo and whatch everything for the laptop and i was sure in the end that is hardware problem becouse i also noticed that the 3 light on the laptop doesn't work even the light for the charging doesn't work also when i go in the bios menu don't work again if the laptop is charging the light is orange and when is full charge is white but they dont work even in the bios for this reason i send it back becouse it was a new laptop and i wanted te prevent warranty at the beginning

Also i make a lot of tests and the problem appears at every heavy game and heavy task even in the benchmark test's when i stress the GPU and CPU i haved this problem

Now i purchased a model whit rtx 4080 and if i have problem i will write again but for me that was a defect on G614JVR becouse as i said on my old laptop whitout a problem my GPU (4060) used 90-100 watt's and the CPU (i7 13650HX) used around 80 watt's and i never haved a power drop , battery usage when laptop is in AC and missing indicator light's
