( Solved? ) - Random Freezes and Reboots | ASUS ROG STRIX G17 2023 (G713PV)

EyePatch
Level 8

Laptop:
Asus Rog Strix G17 (2023)

Model:
G713PV

Issue:
Since the day I've bought my laptop 3 months ago...

I have been facing random freezes and reboots,

  • These may occur Once in 3 days OR Thrice an Hour

  • May occur during Heavy Use (Gaming), Light Use (Browsing/Watching), No Use (Idle)

  • Sometimes get BSOD after freeze ( such as Dxgkrnl Fatal Error, Clock WatchDog Timeout ) while at times I didn't get BSOD.
  • May occur in Windows or in Linux as well.

I have everything updated, Bios, Drivers, Removed Armoury Crate and using GHelper...

And tried different stuffs but nothing resolved.

---

Potential Solution:

I recently pounced upon French Threads (2 of them) where G712 or similar models had that issue and they say they resolved by setting PCI EXPRESS LINK STATE setting from Max Power Saving to Off.

Thread 1 : https://www.forum-des-portables-asus.fr/forums/threads/rog-strix-g17-plantage-alimentation.23852/

Thread 2 : https://www.forum-des-portables-asus.fr/forums/threads/rog-strix-g17-g712lv-h7061t-plantage-critique...

4 days ago, I set my Battery one to "Moderate Power Saving" & Plugged In to "Off":
PCI EXPRESS.jpg

And since then... I've totally used for 20 hours approx. till now and hasn't faced freeze / reboot.

I want to observe for whole month, and then would confirm/notify about it.

I have G713PV model 2023, and I'm posting here incase it'd help others.

Note: I haven't yet tested for Linux, but I intend to look for similar settting for Linux (Fedora) ss well.

To ASUS Support:
Kindly review this issue and solution.

@Anbby_ROG , With respect I'm tagging you as representative of ASUS Support.

And I wanted ASUS Support review of this issue & potential solution ( With hopes if it's something that may require an Update from Asus to probably fix even this)

Hi @EyePatch ,

Thank you for sharing this issue. I would like to further confirm the BIOS and iGPU/dGPU driver versions currently being used on your device. Additionally, when the problem occurs, what are the GPU and fan mode settings in Armoury Crate?

Are you connecting any external devices (Hub, headphones, keyboard) or using an Ethernet connection?

Please try disabling the Modern Standby Assistant in Armoury Crate and test if there is any improvement. Thank you.

System Specs:

> CPU : AMD Ryzen 7845HX

> iGPU :  AMD Radeon(TM) 610M

> dGPU : NVIDIA RTX 4060

> Memory: Total 32 GB | 4800 MT/s

> Storage: 1 TB SSD

Versions:

> BIOS : 329

> NVIDIA Graphics Driver ( dGPU) : 32.0.15.5599

> AMD Graphics Driver ( iGPU) : 32.0.11029.1008

Armoury Crate -> GHelper:

I have uninstalled Armoury Crate due to high CPU Temps. ( Note: I was getting this error even then )

Using 'GHelper'  where disabled CPU Boost and getting favourable temps.

Regardless of old versions of Gpus and bios, I used to get this error.

Regardless of Silent, Balanced, Turbo mode... I used to get this error.

Regardless of Temps, I used to get this error.

Regardless of connected devices, headphones/mouse or nothing... I used to get this error.

I couldn't test by disabling 'Modern Standby' before.

What resolved for me (as stated in post):

But as I mentioned just now that I'm not getting that error ( Random Freeze & Crashes ) since I Changed PCI Express settings in advanced settings of Power Plan ( which in Windows 11 says only ' Balanced' mode),

And 'Modern Standby' is still enabled at the moment.

Purpose of the post:

@Anbby_ROG , I wanted to notify about this solution of mine for:

- Confirm if it's alright ( for myself and the others)

- Might help notifying something to ASUS Suppport, that might help them implement in one of their updates in the future.

Thank you! It looks like the NVIDIA issue on Linux is resolved. I tested it with no power and USB power on Tuxracer launched using the discrete video card, and there are no error messages in the log. Tomorrow I'll test it with the standard 240W power unit and an external display. However, the NVMe issue persists.

I've used the following guidance.

Edit the `/etc/UPower/UPower.conf` file. Add the following line to the `[PCIeLinkStatePowerManagement]` section:

```
Enabled=false
```

Then, restart the UPower service to apply the changes:

```
sudo systemctl restart upower
```

Whoa 😮

That was unexpected that it would resolve your issue 😅. But great, I'm happy for you and I hope it's resolved even for Plugged in Case. 🙂

Also Thanks for sharing Linux PCI Link State configuration... I'll look around it when I boot to Fedora ( I haven't tested this on Linux yet 😅)

Asus Support should look into this as well ( Link State Power Configuration).

Btw, What's your NVME Issue (I never got to hear about that).

Here is my topic. I have warnings in the Fedora log, but nothing in Windows log.

I agree, ASUS support should look into it.

Yesterday, the NVIDIA card disappeared from the system, even in the BIOS, and only returned after relocating the SSD to a secondary slot. It seems like PCI issues. Otherwise, the NVIDIA card is functioning without any warnings so far under all power options (USB, main 240W, no power). However, apps launched using the discrete (NVIDIA) card on the external display in Fedora are crashing

I'm currently observing for a month (approx 2 week about to be)...

Status Till Now:

I believe that did it... I get one reboot in 3-4 days but probably due to some other reason.

Till now I've observed 3-4 times reboot approx when I'm not around... I suspect it's due to:

- Hibernate / Modern Standby

- Sometimes there's a log of "Reboot due to error check".

I'll continue observation for whole month (2.5 weeks to left). When 10 days remaining, I'll actively start looking into these other reboots.

I also haven't experienced any reboots so far, although I've had a few exceptions in the log. Like you, I’m monitoring the situation.
