ROG M16 (2022) washed out colours display

DUST_DEVIL

Hi! Got a problem with display on my M16 (2022). Basically colors are "washed out" and dimmed. I've noticed yesterday that the colour representation was off. No, it's not a different display mode in Armour Crate, its default.

I have managed to trace the problem to Intel Iris drivers and even found a temp solution: go to Intel Control Centre -> Display -> Reset display colours. Nevertheless, I have to repeat this procedure every time I turn on the laptop or disconnect/connect it to charger. It's very annoying.

The problem does not occur if I enter Ultimate mode, as Intel integrated graphics is switched off them. Therefore it's 100% problem with integrated graphics drivers. Updating drivers to the newest version did not helped. Apparently the issue is connected with the recent Windows update and Intel drivers.

Can I ask for the link to the ROG Intel drivers as well as step by step guide how to remove the current drivers. Preferably not the ones from 2022, but the newest, checked by the Asus Intel Iris drivers, which would not cause the "washed out display" issue on startup (you can actually see how couple seconds after computer starts the colours lose their vibrancy).

Thank you in advance!

Yup! Rolled back in the device manager, restarted, and it no longer looks washed out. Thanks!! For others trying to do the same, open device manager, find ASUS System Control Interface under "System Devices", right click, hit properties, click on the driver tab, then click roll back, hit confirm that you want to do it, then restart your computer. Seems to do the trick. Thanks @Anbby_ROG !

Hi @DUST_DEVIL ,

I'd like to confirm if this issue started recently.
You mentioned the issue occurs only with the iGPU. Have you tried adjusting the color gamut and temperature through GameVisual to see if it improves?
If the issue persists, could you enable logging in Armory Crate, reproduce the issue, and record a video? Please send the following information via private message so we can further investigate:

  • Serial Number:
  • BIOS Version:
  • Windows Build Version: (Settings -> System -> About)
  • Intel Display Driver Version:
  • ASUS System Control Interface v3 Version:

Thank you.

【Here is the file path for the log file for your reference】
In Armoury Crate "Settings" and check "About" page, If clicking App Diagnostics "Record Log", the Privacy Policy Statement will pop out. Once user agreed statement, the Armoury Crate will start to collect problem log  and you can click "Generate log data" to generate the log file with encrypted (ASUS log file).

Hi @Anbby_ROG,

I will send you the requested data later today, please find the further reply why I'm certain that the problem is Intel iGPU drivers.

yes, for me personally it started yesterday, but I have not been using my M16 much in the recent months, postponing updates etc. The GameVisual was my first bet but it was set to Default and colour gamut did not change much. I started to look online and it seems to be a very common issue both with ROGs and other laptops that use Intel Iris X. Please see couple links to the same issue:

Please notice that some of the M16 threads are new, so people are running out into the same problem as we speak, most likely because of the recent Windows Update that messed up with things (I updated the M16 like a week ago). So there is a possibility that in the coming days you will get more questions like mine.

As I said, I can easily fix the problem by going to Intel Command Centre, then go to Display tab on the left and in colour tab click Reset to original colours. This immediately solves the problem, but the solution is not permanent, I have to do it every time I start or unplug laptop. Problem is not replicated if I'm in ultimate mode and Intel iGPU (is this how Intel Iris X is called?) is turned off. Even in one of the links presented above user is asking why in Ultimate mode everything looks so much better and more vibrant 🙂

As I said, apparently the issue can be permanently fixed by going to Device Manager and remove the Intel Iris X drivers and then tell Windows to find an install appropriate driver. Nevertheless, I was hoping you can provide a link to a ROG validated copy of the current Intel Iris drivers. I see that on the Asus Drivers website last drivers for M16 (2022) or even G814JI were issued in the mid-2023, so they are heavily outdated now?

Any chance you could provide a link to validated copy of the new Intel GPU Drivers?

I think it's caused by the recent update of Asus system control interface v3 driver, I rolled back to the old one and reboot the computer,  the color on the screen turns back to the normal.

Hi @DUST_DEVIL ,

Thank you for the information. Could you please test rolling back the ASUS System Control Interface v3 to V3.1.27.0 to see if it resolves the issue? Thank you.

@StoriesT @Anbby_ROG could you please guide me how to do it? Can this be done via myASUS app? Or via Windows Update? I do apologise, I've never done it before 🙁

Hi @DUST_DEVIL @theonlyroot ,
Please remove the ASUS System Control Interface v3 driver from Device Manager - System Device and download version V3.1.27.0 for installation. Test to see if there is any improvement.
We will address this issue by releasing a new version through updates. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi @Automatic5 ,

May I ask what version of the ASUS System Control Interface v3 driver you are currently using? Please try removing the driver and downloading version V3.1.27.0 for installation. Test to see if there is any improvement. Thank you.
