ROG G16 GU605MI reaches 96C WHILE ASLEEP (ninety six degrees celsius!!)

ROG G16 GU605MI has a major design flaw. My newly bought laptop will consistently, repeatably reach nearly 100 degrees Celsius WHILE ASLEEP. This is observed while in "performance" mode, with Windows settings set to "do not sleep when lid is closed" and "do not sleep after any length of time", lid is closed, Steam is downloading games, laptop is plugged in, sitting on a hard flat surface with all vents unobstructed. Other posts mention that the laptop will enter a "kinda sleep but the networking card is still active" state even though Windows is set to "never sleep", and this is indeed what I observe. The problem is, while in this state, the wifi/CPU/SSD keep running but the fans do not run while the lid is closed, leading to potentially damaging heat buildup.

This is a major issue for people like me with a poor internet connection. If I want to download a 60GB game, I need to leave it downloading overnight. My G16 also has an OLED screen, though. So either I leave it open overnight and risk screen burn-in, or I leave it closed and risk the CPU melting.

I hope/believe that ROG could fix this with a firmware update.

Due to the increasingly portable and slimmer design of laptops, the additional ventilation openings on the keyboard are intended to enhance airflow and cooling.

If your laptop is running heavy-load applications, closing the lid may reduce the cooling system's efficiency and airflow, potentially leading to overheating issues.

If you are using an external monitor, we recommend setting the display to "Second screen only" and avoiding fully closing the laptop lid during use. We hope this information is helpful. Thank you!

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding 🙂

My laptop is not running heavy-load applications. Like I said, it is only downloading data from Steam.

I do not have an external monitor.

I really think that, because the CPU is sufficiently awake that it can continue downloading data, the firmware should continue monitoring the temperature and running the fans according to the fan curves in Armoury Crate, regardless of whether the lid is open or closed. If the CPU is hot, run the fans, nothing else is relevant. Please forward this idea to the engineers at ROG.

I will run an experiment tomorrow and see how hot the system gets if it is downloading while asleep with the lid still open.

We recommend that you keep the lid open when downloading games continuously in Modern Standby mode to prevent the keyboard’s airflow vents from being obstructed. If high temperatures still occur while the lid is open, please send us the following information and two logs via private message so we can further analyze the issue. Thank you!

Information Needed:

  • Serial Number:
  • BIOS Version:
  • Windows Build Version: (Settings > System > About)
  • GPU and Fan Mode Settings in Armoury Crate:
  • Are there any external devices connected?
  • Any upgrades or changes to SSD/RAM?
  • Armoury Crate > Settings > About > Service Version > Check Button (Copy all content):

Logs to Provide:

A) Run the following command in Command Prompt (with administrator privileges): powercfg /spr

B) Follow these steps to generate and provide the Armoury Crate logs:

  • Go to Armoury Crate > Settings > About
  • Check "App Diagnostics' record log"
  • Duplicate the issue
  • Press the "Generate log data" button
  • Provide us with the encrypted log file for analysis

Looking forward to your response. Thank you!
