New GU605MI running too hot under minimal load

Hello.

I recently bought a GU605MI (G16) from Best Buy, and it seems to be running far too hot under what I would consider a minimal load. When watching Youtube videos (on the integrated GPU, not the Nvidia GPU) the CPU temperature is holding steady around 75-80 C, and I've seen it go as high as 90C. When typing this post, its holding steady at 75C. That can't be right, the chassis is painfully hot to the touch.

This is with a BRAND NEW laptop (less than one week); the fans are not yet clogged with dust. I exclusively use the laptop with a laptop pad thing, so it is always on a flat rigid surface; nothing is physically obstructing any fan inputs or outputs. According to the Armoury Crate "resource monitor", CPU usage is bouncing around a lot, but usually in 15%-30% range while on Youtube. While on "silent" mode, the CPU fan seems like it won't run higher than 2200 RPM, and on "performance" mode, the fan won't run higher than 3200 RPM. I used the "resource monitor" to record some of my values as proof, but I'm not sure how to upload it...

First question: what is expected temperature and fan behavior under what load?

Second question: how can I fix this?

I believe I have fixed the issue on my own. When in the "performance" (medium) windows Power Plan, the "minimum processor state" while plugged in was set to 100%. After changing this to 5%, I now see a steady temperature of 60-65C while watching Youtube videos. Warmer than I'd like, but much improved, and sometimes it goes as low as 55C. For some reason, the Silent mode baseline temperature has also dropped to the same level, even though I didn't change it's settings. Perhaps I did my test wrong somehow? Idk.

I already had my GPU set to "standard" mode. And suggesting Turbo was not helpful, because I was trying to make silent/performance modes run cooler.

In the "silent" plan this setting was at 5%, and in "turbo" plan this setting was at 100%. I left both of these as they are.

Hello,

It's overheating badly so you best stop using it, take it to the store for an exchange.

Modern CPU temperatuers are all over the place depending on what the CPU load is so to give a number is not that straight forward however, you would expect no more than a 54 Degrees C peak for light loads for such a laptop.

Gaming loads depending on the game, some reviews show this one can hit 90 Degrees C.

We understand your concern regarding the temperatures and fan behavior. To optimize performance while watching videos or running tasks that require higher efficiency, we recommend adjusting the settings in Armoury Crate:

Set the GPU mode to Ultimate or Standard mode for better performance. Change the fan mode to Turbo mode to maximize cooling. After making these adjustments, please test the system and let us know if the temperature improves.

Additionally, we suggest checking the CPU temperature when the system is idle, with no background programs running, to better understand the baseline thermal performance.

For further cooling support, using a cooling pad along with your current setup may help enhance airflow and heat dissipation.
If the issue persists or if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know. Thank you!

Due to the regional holidays, my responses may be slightly delayed.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding 🙂
