Issue with Strix Scar 18 (RTX 5080) Crashing During Gaming on External Monitor

I recently purchased a Strix Scar 18 with an RTX 5080 and connected it to an Alienware OLED monitor via the HDMI 2.1 port. During gaming, I’m experiencing frequent crashes with the following symptoms:

  • 50/50 chance of a crash during gaming sessions.
  • External monitor randomly goes black (even without a full crash).
  • System either blue screens or reboots.
  • Event Viewer logs nvlddmkm Event ID 153 error with GPUID: 100.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Updated all drivers.
  • Adjusted video settings in multiple ways.
  • Key Finding: Switching the power plan from Performance to Balanced significantly reduces the crashes (does not eliminate the random black screens however).

Questions:

  • Has anyone else experienced similar issues with these new RTX 5080 laptops?
  • Is this simply a known issue with these new high-power graphics cards in laptops?

I’m new to gaming laptops, having always used desktop rigs. I assumed I’d be able to game on an external monitor without issues, but that hasn’t been the case. I moved to a smaller office and was hoping to save space with a laptop instead of building another desktop rig.

Things I’m Considering:

  • Replacing the HDMI cable (even though I don’t suspect it’s faulty).
  • Monitoring system resources during gameplay (though I only have one monitor available as using both the external monitor and laptop screen in extended mode causes weird screen glitches).
  • Purchasing a dock to help connect the monitor to the laptop

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

System Specs: Intel Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5080, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, Windows 11 v10.0.26100, GeForce Game Ready Drive v576.52

UPDATE: I swapped out my HDMI cable for one I found on Amazon, adjusted the power settings to balanced, and activated NVIDIA DLSS frame generation in the game. Since making these tweaks, I've been playing the new Assassin's Creed for about an hour without any problems—no black screens or crashes so far! I'm really surprised because the HDMI cable I was using was fairly new and seemed decent since I bought it from Best Buy. The one I purchased here was only $10, but it had good reviews. I guess the HDMI cable I had wasn't as great as I thought!
