Is it okay to install an old Nvidia graphics driver?
My Mum's laptop has been having an issue with the latest few graphic driver updates, so I went onto the manufacturer support page for the laptop in question and downloaded the OEM driver there.
Unfortunately, as it was an Nvidia graphics driver OEM, the download and install driver was from ASUS and didn't include the Nvidia custom, clean install which is what I wanted to do.
I just installed the driver and under device manager the original OEM provided driver shows and on the Nvidia app it says the driver installed is from 2024 which was the one I wanted and there are updates available to the driver, (which obviously I don't want).
It seems to have resolved the issue my Mum was having with the driver update causing flickering on the screen, but I just wanted to check that even though I was unable to do a clean install what I did was okay and won't cause any problems?
I’m not very techie, I like playing games but when it comes to drivers and hardware I’m hopeless.

Hello,
Yes if that is the driver that works then its ok to keep.
Updated drivers have a few purposes
- Fix bugs
- Add support
- Improve performance
- Add new features
So if all these updates in the newer drivers are not required or do not have any impact for you then there is really no point updating and it is fine to continue using older drivers.

Thank you, I didn’t keep using the old driver - I had an issue with the latest Nvidia driver so I just downloaded the Nvidia ASUS OEM older driver but latest compatible and tested version and installed it.
It seems to have installed fine, I just wanted to make sure it was okay to install an older driver.

The driver offered on the ASUS website is based on the Nvidia driver provided , and has multiple compatibility tests and verifications before release to ensuring the best experience for users. If you encounter any issues while using the latest version of the driver provided by the Nvidia, it is recommended to install the ASUS website driver first to ensure stability and compatibility.

Hello, thank you for replying.
Yes - I did that and the ASUS OEM Nvidia driver is a lot more stable now. I just wanted to check downloading and installing it over the previous Nvidia driver was okay to do?
There seems to be no issues now and the screenshot shows it has installed correctly.
Can I just check that 556.07 is the latest tested and supported ASUS OEM Nvidia driver for my device? I have a G614JI
