G814JVR's External Monitor drops off Device Mgr on sleep w/DisplayPort, but it doesn't if I use HDMI

Hi folks,

I have a brand new (bought mid July) ROG Strix G814JVR.317,  Win 11 home 64-bit. Corei9-14900HX, 32 of RAM, with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX4060.  The graphics card has an HDMI 2.1 port as well as 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C support DisplayPort™ / power delivery / G-SYNC and finally, 1x Thunderbolt™ 4 support DisplayPort™

To pair with this, I have a 31.5" Acer ZX322QU QHD monitor, also brand new.

When I connect the monitor using the HDMI cable, everything appears to work fine.   The HDMI limits the refresh rate to 144 Hz which is "probably fine", but not quite what I paid for, so, I ordered a DP-to-USBC cable so that I could use the DisplayPort, and get 180 Hz, to see what that was all about.

However, when I connect it using the DisplayPort-to-USB-C cable, the monitor drops right off the Device Manager whenever the PC goes to sleep or I reboot.  It remains powered on (blue LED indicator), but doesn't wake back up on its own; I have to manually hit the toggle button behind the monitor, at which point, Windows then recognizes it and re-adds it as a Monitor in Device Manager, and it shuffles the displays back to normal.

Hitting the toggle manually 15 times a day is a chore that I didn't sign up for, and not something I'm eager to embrace in my brand new hardware.  I'm within my return windows here, so am trying to see if I can solve the problem before then.  Any help would be most welcome.

Here's what I've tried:

  • I have tried plugging it into both of the USB-C slots to see if that makes any difference; it doesn't.
  • I have updated the monitor driver to the latest one from Acer (though it's not that new; from 2020.)  Prior to this, it was using the "Generic Monitor" from the monitor.inf that ships with Windows.
  • I have tried uninstalling the monitor, factory resetting it internally using the OSD, unplugging it, and holding its power for 1 minute, then reconnecting it.  (an Acer Support suggestion.)
  • I have updated the NVIDIA driver to the latest (currently 560.70)
  • I have tried jolting it to recognize it after waking using Win-Ctrl-Shift-B.
  • I have tried disabling G-SYNC (on the PC) and Freesync (on the monitor)
  • I have tried disabling on the monitor: Quick Start Mode, and Auto Source
  • Importantly, I have connected this same monitor using the same cable to my wife's laptop - no drivers, no modifications, no setup needed.  It wakes from sleep JUST FINE using DisplayPort in the USB-C.
  • I repeated this test with my son's laptop.  Same deal - it wakes from sleep just fine using my existing cable with zero setup, and Windows doesn't drop the monitor as a device when it sleeps.

So, why does this laptop drop the monitor as a device whenever it goes to sleep or reboots?   I haven't been able to figure this out yet.  Any suggestions would be most appreciated, as this is starting to feel like a defect in the laptop.

Hi @hilojackgame ,

I would like to confirm with you whether you have tried using the ASUS-verified NVIDIA Graphics Driver Version V31.0.15.4624 for testing.
If the issue still persists, could you please record a video of the external display not being detected after sleep wake-up? Additionally, please use the AsLogDumptool to capture a segment of the system information after the issue occurs and provide the following information via private message. I will coordinate with the relevant departments to check this issue. Thank you.

  • Serial Number:
  • BIOS Version: 317
  • Windows Build Version: (Settings - System - About)
  • Display Driver Version:
  • Are there any external devices connected?
  • Have you added or replaced SSD/RAM?
  • Armoury Crate SE > Settings > General > About > Service Version > Check Button (Copy all content):

Hi @Anbby_ROG .

Could you elaborate on what the AsLogDumptool is, and where to obtain it, please?

I installed the graphics driver you linked.  No change in behavior.

Private Message has been sent, containing the information you requested in your bullet points.  Thanks!
