FX506IV Black line below the task bar

NCTX
Level 8

Hey guys,

I have the issue with FX506IV laptop: after reboot below the task bar appears 1-3 mm horizontal black line, "eating": part of the task bar. Sometimes it "eats" 20-30% of the taskbar, so you can barely read the date numbers in the bottom right corner. The issue appeared recently, probably with the latest Windows update.

It disappears by itself after a while (up to 30 minutes), or it disappears instantly if you switch to 60 hz refresh rate (laptop supports and runs on 144 hz).

Laptop: ASUS TUF FX506IV

OS: Win 10 Pro v. 22H2

Does anyone know the reason and possible solution?

--------------

Update as of 21 September 2023:

04 Aug 2023: With the help of CRU software I have manually decreased the refresh rate to 120 Hz. It temporary solved the issue, and the black line disappeared.

However now, 1.5 month after, the line appeared on 120 Hz also. So, as it was mentioned in the other forums the disease keeps spreading, and I had to change rr to 110 Hz. I guess in the next couple of weeks 110 Hz will be affected also. On 144 Hz more than 20% of the screen is "corrupted" with this black line.

Actually, at this moment I'm not sure that this is software problem and lean more to hardware issues. If you Google "display 144hz black line" you will see a lot of results of similar issues with the 144hz displays. And almost everywhere the only solution was service center and exchange to another product. So, most likely this is something hardware-related.

What is more, it looks to be a common issue for the TUF A15 series. I have found several threads about it, and almost everywhere it has appeared after ~2 years of service (same in my case). Most likely the display (or its parts/connections) "wears out" on 144 hz in 2 years, and then starts failing. Here's one of the threads about that from late 2021-mid 2022:

Since my warranty is already gone (and also there are no ASUS centers in the country I'm currently at) the only way out for me is to install CRU soft and manually decrease refresh rate from 144 to 120-130 hz (without CRU you can choose only between 60 and 144 hz, and 60 is quite uncomfortable after 144). It solves the issue, but I guess temporary - according to other users it would get worse and worse, and you would need to decrease refresh rate more and more.

Hi @NCTX ,

I would like to confirm whether the NVIDIA Graphic Driver (V30.0.15.1278) and BIOS (320) versions are the latest releases from the ASUS website. Additionally, I would like to inquire if you recently installed new RAM.

Please refer to the relevant instructions in the link provided below to try reinstalling the drivers and performing a hard reset to test if it improves the situation:

If the issue persists or if you have any other concerns, please feel free to let me know. Thank you.

To speed up issue identification, please provide the product model, BIOS, and driver versions, along with the troubleshooting steps you've already tried to avoid redundant checks.

Thanks for the reply, but are you sure that V30.0.15.1278 is the driver needed for the graphic card? I mean, I have Ge Force Experience, and the latest driver there for my card (RTX 2060) is 536.67, release date 07/18/2023, while V30.0.15.1278 from ASUS website is from 2022/10/06 what looks like a bit outdated. Plus the different range of the versions looks strange.

Anyway, I have installed these versions (V30.0.15 for GC and V320 for BIOS) and it didn't help. RIght now this black line is about 4-5 mm wide - I cannot even tell what date it is on the time-date block in the bottom right corner of the Win.

Hi @NCTX ,

I'm sorry for any concerns caused.

The drivers released on the ASUS official website have undergone compatibility testing to avoid any compatibility issues that may arise from using the latest drivers. That's why we recommend you to try using ASUS drivers to test the situation.
May I ask if you have performed a hard reset test? Based on your description, it seems more likely to be a system/software issue. Have you tried resetting the system to test it? Thank you.

Hi @NCTX ,

Thank you for your response.
You can check whether the issue persists by entering the BIOS. If the problem continues, it indicates a hardware issue.
As I am unaware of your location, you can opt for paid repair and diagnostic services for your laptop even after the warranty period expires.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
