Flow x16 with Windows 11 - Hibernate & Shutdown issue - PC won't wake up from hibernate

Standard
Level 8

Hello everyone,

recently I have been experiencing an issue with the hibernate & shutdown states of my Flow X16 laptop. I will try to explain my issue in as much detail as possible, but if I forget to address something please point it out so I can provide anyone with more info. I will be posting this problem on Asus ROG forums and Microsoft community, the links will be provided below

Device details

I am using a ROG Asus Flow x16 notebook gaming laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800HS and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 with 16GB of RAM. The Flow x16 is a folding device, meaning it can be used as a tablet and as a laptop. Because of that, the laptop's screen can detect touch events (this will be important later).

History

I got this laptop a few months ago and so far there haven't been many great issues with it. Some notable examples of frustrating issues were random freezes and the keyboard not working sometimes. The random freezes randomly stopped happening, I really don't think that they have anything to do with the current issue. The keyboard stopped working sometimes because of a setting in Device manager which turned off specific devices of the laptop to save battery, including my keyboard for some reason... That issue is fixed now. I'm pretty sure the problems started occurring around the time I got my Logitech Pro X Superlight wireless mouse, but that may be completely unrelated.

Symptoms

When my PC is in:

  • Hibernate ==> the physical power indicator is on, the keyboard backlight is off, the fans are on/heat is produced, but when the lid is closed the power indicator is turned off, also the computer cannot be woken up
  • Sleep ==> the same symptoms as in Hibernate, but the computer can be woken up
  • Shutdown ==> the same symptoms as in Hibernate, but the keyboard backlight is on
  • Turned off ==> no lights are turned on, no fans are heard, no heat is produced

Problem description

Here is the problem. When my computer goes to Sleep mode I can easily press any key on my keyboard or move my mouse and the screen turns on again prompting me to log in using Windows Hello which is fine. However, when I put my PC to Hibernate I cannot turn it on again using the same method as when it is in Sleep mode, which is not normal behavior (I think). Just to clarify one thing, I NEVER put my PC to Hibernate manually! I am pretty sure the computer puts itself to Hibernate if it isn't woken up from Sleep after some time because the same symptoms occur. Another thing is that when I manually shutdown my computer, it doesn't actually shutdown as I explained in the Symptoms paragraph.

Ideal solution

My ideal solution for this problem is first, to be able to wake up my computer from Hibernate and second for my computer to completely shutdown/turn off when I shut it down. Both of these things are important for me to be solved, when I want to shutdown my computer I literally don't want it to be using power anymore, very very simple... and for when it is in Hibernate, I want to be able to wake it back up. Regarding the complete shutdown thing, currently the only way to completely turn off my computer is to hold down the physical power button, which... I guess it is fine... I mean the thing I want to avoid is losing data and any work progress as I do a lot of work for university so when I manually shutdown my PC it warns me which apps are preventing shutdown so if I forgot to save something I can go back and save it and then after the shutdown is complete I can hold down the power button to turn it off completely. However, the fact I cannot wake my PC from Hibernate is incredibly frustrating.

Applied remedies (things I've tried)

As you may guess I searched a lot over the internet and here are a few things I've tried:

  • Restarting my PC with all accessories plugged out (in my case only the wireless mouse transmitter)
  • Turning off Fast startup
  • Creating a new power power plan and restarting my PC
  • Updating my BIOS through MyAsus app
  • Uninstalling Armoury Crate through Windows Settings
  • Completely turning off Hibernate through the permission elevated CMD (powercfg -h off)
  • Uninstalling Logitech GHub software
  • ...

Circumstances (possible causes)

Okay, so for now I can see only two causes. One is the before mentioned Logitech wireless mouse, which I really don't think is the issue and second is the tablet mode functionality. So recently I have started doing a lot of PDF annotation because that's what students do for some reason, which means I've used my laptop in tablet mode a lot. Usually when i fold my screen to tablet mode a stupid pop-up notification thing is displayed on the screening saying which mode I'm currently in. But I have noticed that notification doesn't get displayed anymore and also I have many reasons to think this computer for some reason thinks it's constantly in tablet-mode, in other words the PC is stuck in tablet-mode. I say that because my file explorer for example has checkboxes next to files which is something very useful in tablet mode and also when I toggle the taskbar setting "Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet" it actually updates the taskbar even tough I'm using it as a laptop. So yeah... My computer thinks it is a laptop... I have no idea how this can in any shape or form impact the Hibernate mode but here we are... So one solution is probably to make my computer realize it is a laptop when I use it as a laptop.

Hi @Standard ,
Based on the information you provided, it seems that your Asus Flow x16 laptop is encountering issues with sleep and shutdown states.

In sleep mode, the laptop consumes less power than in hibernation and allows you to resume from where you left off, although it might be slower than waking up from sleep mode. To wake the laptop from sleep, you can press the power button. To shut down the laptop completely, you need to click on "Start" in the taskbar, then click on the power icon and select "Shut down." If there are unsaved files, the system will prompt you to confirm the shutdown. You can also search for "Choose a power plan" in the Windows search bar and click "Open." From there, you can configure what actions to take when pressing the power button or closing the lid, depending on whether the laptop is using battery power or is plugged in.

I'd like to confirm whether your BIOS has been updated to version 318 and if you have completed all Windows updates. Sometimes, the inability to wake the computer from sleep mode could be due to BIOS settings being adjusted. I recommend resetting the BIOS settings to default to see if it improves the situation. Additionally, you can use the built-in diagnostic feature in MyASUS to check for any hardware issues.

The information provided is for your reference. If you have any other concerns, please feel free to let us know. Thank you.

Hello @Anbby_ROG ,

I have reset my BIOS and run the One Click Diagnosis from MyAsus app.

Truth be told I got a little bit inpatient with the issue so I decided to reset my Windows. After the Windows reset the problems have gone away. Now my laptop shuts down completely when I press Shutdown, goes to sleep when I press Sleep and with no mistake wakes up when I press some key on my keyboard or move my mouse.

However, my laptop still doesn't have the functionality of changing modes from tablet to laptop to tent and so on... It is still stuck in this hybrid mode where I can use my TouchPad and keyboard (typical for the laptop mode) and where files in the file explorer have checkboxes and where the taskbar is optimized for tablet mode (typical for the tablet mode).

I will also respond to you on my other post.

Thank you!
