Extremely Choppy and Stuttering Gameplay on new Strix Scar 16 laptop

Skeptic04

I bought anew Strix Scar 16 Laptop (RTX4080, i9, 32GB DDR5) a few months ago for mobile gaming. It worked great out of the box, but a few weeks in most games became unplayable due to choppy game play.  In game settings don't seem to resolve the issue. Even older games that the laptop far exceeds are showing the same symptoms. I've been googling for weeks different solutions and nothing seems to resolve the issue.

Games I've been attempting to play are Mass Effect 2/3, Dragon Age Inquisition, Civ VI, Cyberpunk, Diablo IV, and Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Really frustrating that a brand new laptop is nearly unusable.  Probably user error but still...

Hi @Skeptic04 ,

May I ask if you have updated the BIOS to the latest version 317 and tested with the ASUS-validated NVIDIA display driver version V31.0.15.4624?
Please try setting the GPU to Ultimate mode and the fan mode to Turbo in Armoury Crate during gameplay to see if there is any improvement.
Additionally, you mentioned that the gameplay is choppy. Do you experience this issue when watching videos or during general use as well? Thank you.

Anbby, thanks for taking the time to respond.

No BIOS update.  I've updated all drivers had have had the GPU set to Ultimate in Armory Crate, so those boxes are checked.  I have not seen the issue when watching videos on Youtube or in general use.  Just in gameplay.

I'll read up on the BIOS update now.

Bringing this to the top of the forum.  I could really use some help.  I'd like to think I spent $3k on a laptop for more than email and being a paperweight.

Hi @Skeptic04 ,

I would like to confirm whether the same issue still occurs after updating the BIOS. Have you referred to the instructions in the link to adjust the relevant settings for testing?

If the problem persists, please download HWinfo and enable the log recording feature before starting the game. During gameplay, record the video to capture the moments when stuttering occurs. After the game ends, stop the log recording after 10 minutes. Please upload the video and log to your personal cloud and provide the following information via private message for further analysis:

  • Serial Number:
  • BIOS Version:
  • Windows Build Version (Settings > System > About):
  • dGPU Display Driver Version:
  • Game Name where stuttering occurs:
  • Are there any external monitors or other devices connected?
  • Have you installed or replaced SSD/RAM?
  • Armoury Crate > Settings > About > Service Version > Check Button (Copy all content):

Thank you.

i took my time and went through the instructions in the link you shared in detail.  Everything checked out, except that I'm getting a "GameVisual does not support the current screen configuration" alert in Armoury Crate.

I downloaded HWInfo and logged about 20 minutes of nearly unplayable gameplay.  I'll send the log data via DM.
