Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) GA403UI Overheating with Docking Station

Hi,

Earlier this year I bought an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) GA403UI which I love - great laptop. However, when I'm at home I like to connect it to a USB-C docking station to get a full desktop type experience. The dock I use is an Anker USB C Hub ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CF52HF6D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to which I have connected 2x 32" LG Monitors (via HDMI, 3840x2160 resolution) a couple of USB devices (keyboard and mouse), an RJ45 network cable and speakers (via a 3.5mm jack).

Everything works well and the experience is great - except on *SOME* games - most notably Hearthstone Battlegrounds which is my go to casual game where the laptop will overheat and shut down. If I disconnect the dock and play HS BG on the laptop's screen, it never overheats. Also if I'm playing graphically more intense games (Space Marine 2, Fortnite etc) there are no issues and the laptop does not overheat when using the dock.

Is there anyway of fixing this e.g. can I make the laptop throttle rather than just letting it overheat?

Are you sure it's the laptop that overheats? How hot does it get? 

Sound like you're placing a heavy load on the dock, two 4K displays plus PD charging (I assume), amongst other things. It (the dock) must heat up a lot. Perhaps the dock is overheating and crashing the system? Possible that the battery ran down because the dock can't provide enough power to keep the laptop fully-charged? 

The weird part is that it won't do that with more intensive games. So perhaps check the game developer forum or try connecting monitors to the laptop directly to see what happens. I understand that you got the dock so you don't have to do that, but at least try so you might have a alternative solution. Try one and both monitors, the G14 has HDMI plus two Type-C ports with DP support so it's possible.

Hey - thanks MasterC. Apologies - it looks like I forgot to mention 1) the laptop is powered via its own AC adapter directly to the laptop and not via the USB Dock and 2) the first monitor is connected directly to the laptop as as it has one HDMI adapter - the second monitor is connected via the dock.

The dock does not get that hot and is powered via USB C from the laptop.

Ok. So I disconnected the USB dock (with second monitor) and just ran the first external monitor connected via the laptop's HDMI port. The only applications that I had running were the Hearthstone Client and Asus' Armory Crate app so that I can see temps and usage etc of CPU and GPU.

Again the laptop overheated. However, I can't figure out why - because when I was switching to Armory Crate it appeared to be the CPU that was overheating - just before the laptop shutdown, the CPU was at 90C and the GPU was at 60C. The weird thing tho was the CPU usage was at ~18%? Why is the CPU temp so high when the CPU doesn't appear to be under a heavy load?

Could you please share a screenshot of the Armory Crate screen so we can further check the fan settings, GPU/CPU temperatures, usage, and fan performance? Did you experience any lag or abnormal behavior during use?

Additionally, have you upgraded or replaced the SSD/RAM? This information will help us analyze the overheating issue of your laptop more accurately. Thank you!

Hi Anbby thanks for your message. The laptop is factory spec, it has never been upgraded or opened. I have taken some screenshots of the Armoury Crate - not sure how helpful these are - it possible to make Armoury Crate spit out results to a log file as I can share these with you? I downloaded an app called TechPowerUp GPU-Z that monitors some sensors and logs to a file and managed to save the logs during a crash, they are a .csv file which I pulled into Excel to have a look. The results make me think that this is not a CPU temp issue - you can see on the graph where the laptop crashes and shuts down and the CPU is not hotter than at other times and the GPU is under minimal load and drawing hardly any power. How do I open a support ticket?
