Asus Rog Strix G16 with Nvidia 4060 freezing, low FPS, low watts

Folks,
I own an Asus Rog Strix G16 with an RTX 4060 (Model G614JV).
After updating the drivers months ago, my FPS dropped to an insane level that makes impossible play any game. Sometimes even freezing HQ videos. Below, is My Rig details.

I also tried to reinstall Windows. First attempt, using the Recover tool. Nothing changed.
Second attempt, a full reinstall (formatting the C drive).

At this time, I have tried some stuff:

  • Installed the original driver version 536, same issue.

  • Installed the required driver for Call of Duty, 566, same issue.

  • Updated to the latest version (572.83), same issue.

Also, my audio is cracking in a very strange way, using an external monitor or not.
I have also tried different cables to ensure it's not a physical problem. Nothing.

I have downloaded GPU Tweek III and increase the GPU Clock and Memory Clock, same issue.

I did several changes e configurations in the Nvidia Control Panel, same issue.

During the Gameplay I have noted the consume Watts sounds like are limited to 30w with some peaks of 45w and eventually - rarely 67w.

I don't know what else I can do. Any ideas?

I am doing the best I can to avoid send this machine to Asus, since I use it for work and study.

The issue is exactly the same using the Ultimate or Standard GPU mode on Armoury Crate.

  • PowerOptions - Configured to Maximum Performance

  • Notebook connected to power - everything is original and no visible/noted problems

  • Playing with no devices or monitors connected - same behavior

  • All drivers and software are updated to the most recent

  • Bios is updated

Have you tried running a FurMark stress test on the GPU without any external monitors connected to evaluate its stability, cooling performance, and behavior under high load?

Additionally, regarding the Nvidia Control Panel settings, besides the configurations you've already attempted, please check if the "Power management mode" under "Manage 3D settings" is set to "Prefer maximum performance." Also, please try turning off "Vertical sync" and check if "Low Latency Mode" is set to "On" or "Ultra."

You mentioned that you have reinstalled the system and tested different versions of the display driver. Please try again to completely uninstall the display driver using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and then reinstall the ASUS-verified version V32.0.15.6607.

Regarding the audio crackling issue, have you tried reinstalling the relevant audio drivers? If possible, please share more details or a video of the issue with us. Thank you.

To speed up issue identification, please provide the product model, BIOS, and driver versions, along with the troubleshooting steps you've already tried to avoid redundant checks.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Yes, I’ve already tested multiple configurations in the NVIDIA Control Panel, including those listed above — setting Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance, disabling Vertical Sync, and enabling Low Latency Mode to Ultra.

I also previously used DDU to completely remove the display drivers and attempted a clean installation of the version V32.0.15.6607 as recommended, but unfortunately, that did not resolve the issue either.

That said, I will run the FurMark stress test shortly (without any external monitors connected) and will share the results as soon as I can.

Additionally, I’ll upload a video demonstrating both the audio crackling and visual issues and will post the link here for further analysis.

Thank you again for the continued support. I’ll report back with the test results and video shortly.

Hey! Sorry you're going through this. A friend of mine has similar issues on their ROG and here's what finally worked for them:

1. Check Armoury Crate > GPU Mode

Make sure it’s set to Standard or Ultimate mode and not “Eco,” which can force the system to use integrated graphics even when discrete GPU is needed.

2. BIOS & Firmware Update

Go to ASUS Support and manually update the BIOS, EC firmware, and ME drivers. Corrupted microcode or old firmware can tank wattage and FPS.

3. DDU and Clean GPU Driver Reinstall

Boot into Safe Mode

Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to fully wipe GPU drivers

Reboot and install the latest WHQL-certified driver from NVIDIA directly, not from Windows Update or Armoury Crate.

4. Power Settings

Set Windows Power Plan to High Performance

In NVIDIA Control Panel, go to Manage 3D settings > Power management mode, set to Prefer maximum performance.

5. Check for GPU Clock Lock

Use tools like HWiNFO or GPU-Z to check if the core/memory clocks are stuck at idle speeds. If so, it could be a driver conflict, BIOS setting, or background service locking it.

6. Monitor Temps and Throttling

Make sure temps aren’t triggering power limits. Undervolting with Intel XTU or ThrottleStop might help stabilize things too.

7. Roll Back Display Refresh Rate Temporarily

Even though the panel supports 240Hz, try switching to 60Hz or 120Hz to test stability. Sometimes, high refresh rates conflict after driver updates.

Hi folks! First of all, thanks for all help!
I have uploaded two videos. The first one, is a little old, from weeks ago, showing the issue.
https://youtu.be/p-nrLJ2Nwdk

The second video I recorded contains the benchmark/stress test using FurMark as suggested.
https://youtu.be/iHx1bXj1sFI

I have tried all the suggestions above, even before both of you commented here. But after running the stress test, I closed my game, went to work and hours late, I tried play again and.... it's quite normal now!

Honestly, I don't know what happened because I have only installed FurMark and GPU-z to capture the required data and now the game is almost running normal. I am still having some freezing, using the notebook monitor or external monitor, but only while playing. But now I can at least do a alt+tab with the game opened in background - which is something that was failing and crashing the screen before.

I don't have a minimum idea about what may happened. I am stuck with this issue since Jan/Feb.

Anyway, I really appreciate your time and suggestions, because somehow, they fixed the issue.

I am still having the problem. I have tried too many things, and it's not fixed. Rarely it works well.
These are my results running the FurMark test in different resolutions.

What else can I try?

So after all the researches, I am going to say that you can download G-helper, Asus users use it for Undervolting. after using it i've got everything to normal and fps boosted too well. you can try it, I've got now no stutters and no lags.

I think support doesn't care at all, they did last BIOS update in November of 2024, so I am saying I am scammed buying this laptop G614JV
