AMD Radeon 890M dynamic brightness on Asus TUF FA401WV

I bought an Asus TUF FA401WV. It has two graphics cards: AMD 810M and NVIDIA.

It's a great laptop, but there is absolutely no way to disable the dynamic screen brightness!

  • In the display settings of Windows 11, the option to disable dynamic brightness is simply missing. It’s not available for this display and these drivers.

  • No tricks with disabling Windows services or using regedit work. I’ve read through all the forums.

  • In AMD Adrenalin Reaction, there was an option related to dynamic brightness, but it doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t work.

Disabling dynamic brightness is completely impossible. For people who work a lot with text and multiple applications, this is unbearable. It's ruining our eyes and our nerves.

The only thing that helps is disabling the AMD card completely in the BIOS and using only the NVIDIA GPU. That stops the brightness changes, but it significantly drains the battery.

Please contact AMD. They need to update their drivers and settings. Dynamic brightness must be possible to disable in a straightforward way.

We would like to confirm more information about your device to clarify this issue. You mentioned that the option to disable dynamic brightness is missing in the display settings of Windows 11. Could you please provide a screenshot so we can further verify this? Additionally, are you using the ASUS-verified AMD graphics card driver version V32.0.12010.5003 for testing?

Please also try setting the GPU to Ultimate mode in Armoury Crate to see if the option to disable dynamic brightness becomes available. Thank you.

To speed up issue identification, please provide the product model, BIOS, and driver versions, along with the troubleshooting steps you've already tried to avoid redundant checks.

⚠️ DM are for collecting personal information only. For technical assistance, please post your issue in the discussion thread so everyone can help and share insights! Thank you for your understanding! 🙂

Using little bit newer version, but it doesn't matter. The problem appear right once I got the laptop with older driver. Driver version is attached.

This option is available always, but it simply does nothing. There is no way to disable dynamic brightness completely. Attached.

Right now, I'm writing to you, and the settings are exactly as I showed in the screenshots. At the same time, the Adrenalin Edition app is set to dark mode, and your forum is also in dark mode.

Every time I switch to this forum, the screen gets darker. And every time I go to another web page with light colors, the screen becomes brighter.

This happens gradually. The screen dims over about 5 seconds. White colors become darker.

Thank you for providing the detailed information. Please try turning off the "Dynamic Display Brightness" option in Armoury Crate > System Configuration and test if the issue improves. If the problem persists, could you please record a video demonstrating the screen brightness issue and send us the product serial number along with your location via private message? This will help us further clarify the problem. Thank you for your cooperation.

Not sure what you mean by  "Dynamic Display Brightness" in Armoury Crate. There is a System configuration screen for the concrete current laptop. And there is the only option related to brightness "Optimal display brightness", but this option was always disabled in my case.

FYI:

The tooltip says that this option only applies when running on battery. First of all, that's already strange. I want to disable dynamic brightness permanently, in all modes. Secondly, the screenshot below was taken while the power cord was unplugged and the laptop was running on battery. In particular, in this mode, another option above it did get disabled. However, the "Optimal display brightness" option did not turn on.

I have no idea what the "Ultimate Mode" mentioned in the tooltip is. That mode simply doesn’t exist in my settings. Right now, I’m using the “Performance” mode. But switching modes has no effect on this option. It remains disabled no matter what.

Thank you for the information provided. We are indeed referring to the "Optimal display brightness" setting.

Could you please record a video demonstrating the screen brightness issue and provide the product serial number via private message? We will forward this to our technical team for further investigation. Thank you for your cooperation.

VIDEO ON GOOGLE DRIVE

This is a screen recording. I recommend downloading the video and watching it in full screen. I'm switching between dark and light applications. The changes don’t happen instantly and they’re not very noticeable, but they are there.

It's much easier to see if you look at the bottom toolbar with the Windows icons.

Can't answer you in PM.

So, I couldn’t find version 1.6.18 — I assume that was a mistake on your part.

Now, here’s the interesting part. To record a video for you, I enabled the AMD GPU in BIOS again. I started the laptop, and once again the screen began adjusting brightness dynamically. But then I unplugged the power cable and — miracle — the “Optimal display brightness” option finally became active.

Here’s what’s strange: it doesn’t matter whether this option is enabled or disabled — the screen brightness doesn’t change at all when running on battery. What’s even more interesting is that now the brightness also doesn’t change when the power cable is plugged in.

So, everything is working fine now. Important note: I didn’t reboot the computer. The problem existed, then I unplugged the power cable, toggled the “Optimal display brightness” option, and the issue disappeared immediately in both modes. Still, the option itself has no visible effect.

In summary, I see three problems here:

  1. “Optimal display brightness” doesn’t always become available in battery mode. In my case, it was always disabled — but today, for some reason, it started working.

  2. “Optimal display brightness” doesn’t do anything in battery mode. Turning it on or off makes no difference.

  3. Personally, I don’t understand why dynamic brightness is tied only to battery mode. I want to disable it permanently in all modes.

PS: I don't understand why there are so many restrictions on your forum. Every time I try to send a message, I get at least one error. It constantly complains about invalid HTML in the text, even though there isn’t any.

"Your post has been changed because invalid HTML was found in the message body. The invalid HTML has been removed. Please review the message and submit the message when you are satisfied."

After this message I require to copy the message, refresh the page, do captcha again and this is the only way to send it.

Why do you even need CAPTCHA for registered users? And not just a regular CAPTCHA — a two-step CAPTCHA?

Now it turns out I also can't send more than one message in private messages.

Thank you for the update. The "Optimal display brightness" feature primarily works to dynamically reduce the backlight brightness when only using the battery, in order to extend battery life. If you prefer not to have the backlight adjusted dynamically, we suggest disabling this setting and continuing to monitor if the issue occurs again.

Regarding the PM issue, we will internally confirm this with the relevant department. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and for giving us the opportunity to provide a better experience. Thank you for your understanding.
