RT-AX89X going out of memory every 10 minutes (asd process?)

Hello, my router froze up overnight, so I rebooted it, and ever since the logs are showing that it is going OOM about every 10 minutes. First it starts spamming:

May 17 10:44:26 kernel: [ 5872.720019] wlan: [0:E:QDF] NBUF alloc failed 12107B @ dp_get_ppdu_desc:3430

Then it looks like a high memory killer kicks in and kills a process called asd:

Looking back at when the router locked up initially overnight, it seems like it tried to look for a firmware update automatically around 4am, (which is strange because I have auto updates turned off), then started spamming the 'NBUF alloc failed' message:

My update.   I have other posts in this thread.   I purchased another ASUS router (RT-AC66U-B1) as it is inexpensive (~$55), it supports DD-WRT, Merlin or Tomato (any branch) and I only need a basic router, no wifi, as I use Ubiquiti APs for WiFi.   I have installed Merlin on my device and everything is working fine.  As for the older ASUS router that had the problem, like others here, I did not see an update for the AI functionality in the /jffs/asd(or whatever the directory is) via ssh (as of yesterday)   I see even with the service turned off, ASUS continues to touch these routers and in this case, disrupted my network.   My older routers' last firmware update was 2+ years ago.

Merlin is updating firmware 4 to 5 times a year.   Core asus functionality and UI is preserved, but Merlin brings added UI screens and functionality.  Pretty simple to update, following same manual update process.  Only catch is not all ASUS (or other OEMs) routers are supported.   There is a page that shows supported routers.  If anyone is interested, here is the site:  https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/.   Lots of info at this site to review.

I also have the RT-AC66U-B1, but I'm confused by your post.  The site shows that the RT-AC66U is no longer supported, and does not list the RT-AC66U-B1.

The network equipment EOL list should be authoritative.  It recommends the RT-AC66U_B1 as a replacement for other models, i.e. it's not yet EOL.

https://www.asus.com/event/network/EOL-product/

@Rooke - go here:  https://sourceforge.net/projects/asuswrt-merlin/files/.  This is the URL of the repository for all of the latest GA binaries.  In that list, you will us the RT_AC66U_B!.   Go into that folder.  There is one file, a .txt file named "Use the RT-AC68U firmware".   The RT-AC68U has the EXACT same CPU chip.  So, one would go into the RT-68U folder to download firmware for the RT_AC66U_B1.  I am running version 386.11, downloaded from the above URL for the RT-AC68U, on my RT_AC66U_B1 router.  I Hope this helps!

Experiencing the worst case scenario. A89x user here and my router is shot. Keeps rebooting into red WAN light, even without cable plugged in. My best shot was to leave it off for 8 hours and then I was able to use it for about 10 minutes before that cycle started again.

when I can get 10 minutes of it not rebooting, what should I do on my MacBook to fix this? macOS only, no access to windows.

There is a beta firmware version you can download in this thread somewhere, it worked wonders for me. You can also follow the various instructions for loading the latest firmware and see if that works too. Either way, they have already fixed this issue, as far as I am aware.

Is that possible without having access to the gui? I haven’t been able to access that at all. Router just keeps rebooting.

This beta firmware got my router up and running. RT-AX89U_9.0.0.4_388_32094-ge476ac0_for_user.trx . I can't post a url for some reason so you'll have to google it.

Thanks for pointing me in right direction, how would I flash this firmware to router without gui access?

im limited to macOS too.

Try a hard reset on the router and see if it downloads it on it's own. Locate the reset button on the backside of your unit with a sharp object, e.g. a paperclip or pencil, press and hold the reset button for 5s or until the power led starts flashing.
