Good day!
I recently upgraded my internet plan to 1gb. The ISP provide a nice Wifi6 router (Adtran), but I decided to get the Asus RT-BE96U, which is quite an investment.
I have lot of difficulties to get fast download speed with the Asus. When I do a speed test with the Adtran, I get a steady ±700Mbps, but with the Asus, there's a peak at around 700-800Mpbs at beginning of test, then it slow down to around 350-400Mbps. There's no issue with the upload speed. I'm on the 5ghz network, but the speed is not faster on the 6ghz network (which should be).
Any help?

There could be multiple reasons for this and mostly pertains to how you configure you Asus router's Wifi and QoS.
1. Are you connecting the Internet WAN connection cable to the 10G port? have you configured WAN on that 10G port
2. In QoS what is the mode selected
3. Are you doing a speed test from your PC/Laptop. Did you try to do a speed test from within the Asus router under Game Acceleration
4. Revisit your Wifi Settings on the 5 and 6 Ghz band and the performance level set.
These may help drill down to the issue.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
1-I have configured the WAN cable to the 1g port, since the ISP speed is 1g. Should it in the 10g port?
2-I have deactivated QoS.
3-I did a speed test within the router under Adapative QoS/internet speed. The speed is OK, around 950mpbs. The other speed tests where on my PC.
But I think I may figure the problem: my onboard wifi adapter is Intel Wifi6 AX201. I wanted to upgrade to Wifi6E and having an external antenna, so I bough a USB wifi adapter (MSI AXE5400). All the problem are with the USB wifi. When I remove it and return with the onboard Intel, everything is faster and stable. I dont have access to the 6g network, but the 5g is very solid.
Is it possible that there might by some sort of incompatibility between the router and the usb adapter? Or it's just that usb adapter are bad? (although it work well with the ISP router))
Thanks!

I use the Intel Wifi6 AX201 and it works perfectly fine.
WRT USB dongles for Wifi Connection, the speed will be limited by the USB port.
On a USB 2.0 while a USB 3.2 will have a much better speed. USB C will give you the best speed, but again not sure if you would get the 1GBPS throughput on any of these ports. Internal devices directly interact with the MB and have a higher bus speed to support the required data transfer rate. USB dongles are mostly for older laptops and only an alternate in case the laptop does not have an internal wifi adapter.
