Closest ROG Rapture GT6 Bind is weak

I have two ROG Rapture GT6 gaming routers. I use the first as a router in my living room and the 2nd as an access point about 40ft away (it shows as great connection). I then have my computer another 40ft away from the AP (making it 80ft from the router).

My computer always connects to the router and not the AP and when I bind it to the AP it says it has a weak connection. I have several devices in my office at this distance and all of them bind back to the router 80ft away. Is there something I'm missing?

I have backhaul set to the 5ghz channel, I have the latest firmware, I've optimized my system several times.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi @superchargd007m ,

Thank you for providing detailed information. Regarding the connectivity issue you're experiencing with your ROG Rapture GT6 gaming routers, kindly check the following aspects:

  • Signal strength attenuation:
    • Distance impact: A distance of 80 feet from the router can indeed cause signal strength attenuation, especially when passing through walls or other obstacles.
    • Interference sources: Surrounding electronic devices, metal objects, or building structures can interfere with wireless signals.
  • Router settings:
    • Automatic channel selection: Although you have manually set the backhaul channel, the router may automatically adjust the channel based on the environment, leading to unstable connections.
    • QoS settings: Improper QoS settings may cause some devices to prioritize connecting to the main router.
  • Device drivers:
    • Network card driver: Please ensure that your network card driver is the latest version to ensure optimal wireless performance.

We recommend that you try the following steps:

  1. Adjust the channel:
    • Try manually setting a less congested 5GHz channel. You can use a wireless network analysis app on your phone to scan the surrounding wireless networks and find a channel with a stronger signal and less interference.
  2. Optimize antenna placement:
    • Adjust the antenna positions of both routers to ensure that the antenna direction is pointed towards your computer and access point.
  3. Turn off unnecessary wireless networks:
    • If there are other wireless networks around you, try turning them off or changing their channels to reduce interference.
  4. Check for physical obstacles:
    • Make sure that there are no walls, metal objects, or other obstacles between your computer and access point that are blocking the signal.
  5. Reset the routers:
    • Restore both routers to factory settings and then reconfigure them.
  6. Update firmware:
    • Ensure that the firmware of both routers is the latest version.
  7. Use a wired connection:
    • If you want to ensure a stable connection, you can try using an Ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to the access point.

Thank you.

Providing detailed device specifications (MB/CPU/GPU/PSU, etc.) and the respective driver versions, OS version, and BIOS version will help us analyze the issue more effectively.

This is Access Point Mode or AiMesh Node?  It may say "weak" but verify the RSSI is actually weak?
