Z790 Maximus Hero M.2 Location

Hello.

I am installing a Samsun 980 Pro 2TB M.2 in my Z790 Maximus Hero MB.  It will be the only drive, for now.  

Which slot should I install it in?  I'm confused on how it cuts the lanes of the PCIe slot?

We recommend referring to the Specifications summary on pages vii and viii of the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO user manual.
The M.2_1 slot is directly attached to the CPU, while the M.2_2 and M.2_3 slots are attached to the chipset.

Additionally, if needed, please consult page xiii for information on connectors with shared bandwidth.

Please adjust the installation slots according to your usage requirements.
