Z790 Formula + Crucial T700 4TB not detected

Hello,

In February I installed Windows 11 on this SSD (Crucial T700) on my PC, everything worked fine. I took the SSD out one week later and after putting it back, it was not booting up Windows.

While checking in BIOS, it was not recognized, and I have tried to do everything as troubleshooter I found online, but nothing worked. I thought that the SSD was broken but I put the SSD on my laptop and it worked just fine, nothing wrong. I have tried for several hours, nothing really worked so I thought that the motherboard was defect and returned it and got a new one, and another SSD replacement as well just to be 100%.

With the new motherboard and SSD I had sort of the same problem, but managed somehow to install windows and did not touch it anymore since there. Now, I had to re-install windows and after installing it, everything was okay, installed drivers and when windows rebooted, it was stuck in "Windows updating" for 30 minutes. I turned off the PC, and when turning on, it didn't show up any SSD in BIOS at all.

Tried all troubleshooting steps possible once again, then, I put the SSD on the laptop and it recognizes it directly, even booting from it without issues. I formatted it from the laptop, put in the motherboard M2_1 slot (the one behind the LCD screen, only Gen5 slot) and it got recognized, tried to install windows, it simply boots back empty and BIOS won't recognize it.

I tried various settings in BIOS, updated it, tried installing IRS drivers, tried other slots on the motherboard, etc.

I saw many people complaining about the Samsung and Crucial SSDs, but most of them solved in the end by BIOS settings or installing the IRS drivers.

I am 100% sure there's a contability issue here between the Z790 formula and the SSD, since the SSD seems to work perfectly fine in my laptop, recognized directly. For some reason, while it is formatted, it's getting recognized, but as soon as you install windows on it, seems that something modifies either on the SSD or BIOS settings and it doesn't get recognized anymore.

What can I do to solve this issue?

Today I formatted the SSD again completely on my laptop.

PC saw it, in BIOS everything was okay. During Windows 11 installation screen, the mouse cursor was lagging really bad. Windows got installed in the end, named the PC, logged in to Microsoft, waited for updates.

PC restarted right away and booted to BIOS directly. No SSD recognized on "Storage information" and cannot boot it from it in this case. Put the SSD on my laptop, gets recognized immediately.

Hello @BootF4

Thank you for getting in touch with us.

When the issue occurs, besides the Crucial T700 4TB installed in the M.2_1 slot, are the PCIE(G5)_1 and PCIE(G5)_2 slots also in use, or do you have other SSDs/HDDs or external drives connected?
Could you please check if the BIOS version on your ROG MAXIMUS Z790 FORMULA is the latest version 1503 available on the official website and, after clearing CMOS, whether the PTT is set to Enabled, the OS Type under Secure Boot is set to Windows UEFI Mode, and CSM is set to Disabled under BIOS settings?
We recommend testing the Windows 11 installation again with only a single SSD installed and using onboard video output, or try cross-testing with another SSD if needed.
For more information, please refer to the user manual for hardware installation, the BIOS manual for configuration, and the guide "[Motherboard] How to install Windows 11?" for further instructions.

Thank you.

As the local holiday is ongoing, there may be further delays in responses.
We appreciate your patience in advance.

I reset CMOS from the motherboard button, SSD was seen, resumed Windows 11 installation. On the "Please wait for updates..." the PC restarted directly on the BIOS, no SSD recognized again. It's a continuous loop.

Funny enough I get now the error "This PC can't run Windows 11. This PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements to install this version of Windows."

Hi @BootF4 can you please share a screenshot of the following items from BIOS. To take a screenshot, once you enter into BIOS, connect a USB stick and then press F12 to follow the prompts. I have attached screenshots from BIOS for my system as a reference.

  1. Advanced Menu > System Agent Configuration > PCI Express Configuration
  2. Advanced Menu > PCH Configuration > PCI Express Configuration
  3. Advanced Menu > OnBoard Devices Configuration

Also can you please share the exact Make and Model of any GFX Card you are using and in which slot it is installed?
