Z590 - Post Message not showing, boot time 8-15 minutes

I'm not sure what is going on, but the boot time for my PC has always been very long.  It is, at minimum 8 minutes 30 seconds to boot into Windows 11.  Sometimes it takes close to 15 minutes.  There are no post messages, just the following:

  • Blank Screen before boot starts
  • ROG Logo
  • ROG Logo with windows loading GIF

Sitting at the ROG Logo before Windows starts loading takes the most time and is typically around 7 minutes.  Windows booting can be 1-4 minutes.  Without the post messages I can't see what it might be getting hung up on.

The specs are:

Motherboard:  ROG Strix Z590-E
BIOS Mode: UEFI
BIOS Updated Latest Version
CPU: i7-10700KF, 3.8GHz, 3792 MHz, 8 Cores
RAM: cmk32gx4me2e3200c16 (Corsair Vengeance DDR4 (4x16GB) 3200 MHz

Hopefully someone has an idea what is going on, this is a very frustrating Motherboard.  I've dealt with it for years by simply trying never to reboot, but Windows has had updates lately that reboots automatically - so I have seen it a lot more.

Hello, @Covington70

May I ask if the situation you described happened after any changes were made?
For example, updating the BIOS or connecting an external device
Have you updated the Intel ME to the corresponding version in the BIOS?
The latest BIOS version of the ROG STRIX Z590-E GAMING WIFI is 1903, which requires updating the Intel ME to 15.0.45.2411V2.
Meanwhile, since your memory is not listed in the QVL for the ROG STRIX Z590-E GAMING WIFI, we recommend cross-testing memory modules from the QVL or trying to install a single memory module in the recommended memory installation slot as outlined in the user manual.

Thank you.

I just did that. Now I can't boot without no screen or BIOS always popping up.

Before I could at least pull power, boot, and get to Windows. Now it only goes to BIOS

Hello, @Covington70

May I ask if you have tried updating the Intel ME, clearing CMOS, changing to the memory listed on the QVL, or if you have only installed a single memory module?
Could you provide details on the troubleshooting steps you have already attempted?

Thank you.

I've done the following:

  • Updated Intel ME (which got me to the worst point)
  • Cleared cmos ( button on back, 30 seconds)
  • Took out all but 1 memory chip
  • Removed all USB except keyboard/mouse

I have one other memory module: CMU32GX4M2C3000C15B. I could try that, but I don't think memory module are the issue since they have worked for years on this MB.

It did boot (took about 8-10 minutes) after I reset the CMOS.  I'm not sure if that was just blind luck, though, as it would previously boot to Windows - but only after I removed power for 30 seconds.  This is my work PC, so I'm a bit afraid to try a second reboot.  I would say it is still really not working since it takes 8-10 minutes to load.  I wish I could see the post messages to know what it is hanging on.

I do know when I watch the MB, the LED shows a bunch of numbers running through and then hangs on A2 for quite a while.  At that point I usually know it will either go straight to BIOS or boot up.  But I won't see the ROG logo for at least 3-5 minutes from that point.

Video card shows NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, but is ASUS branded.  I'm looking in device manager for that info, but don't see anything different on the graphics board, which says 1060.

well, the PC rebooted and back to the same.  Woke up on the BIOS screen.  Still no postback messages so I have no idea what is going on.  Not sure why the BIOS wouldn't have a setting so that I could see the postback messages 😞  The only way to get it to boot now is to pull the plug out of the back, wait, then try to boot again.  Eventually that works.  Still slow as hell to boot, but at least it gets there.
