Wifi Driver crashes PC

Greetings everyone,

TL;DR: computer won't boot unless I uninstall WiFi driver.

Seems to be related to : https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/gaming-motherboards/x670e-plus-wifi-onboard-wifi-chip-causes-system-in...
(did not have BSOD however)

I've been struggling to get my computer to boot for the past hours.

I did end up to the conclusion that the WiFi driver is somehow crashing the PC.

Here are some information on my build

  • Dual Boot with Ubuntu 22.04
  • TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI
  • AMD RYZEN 7 7700
  • BIOS ver.0821
  • AMD RX7900 XT, driver version 25.5.1

Problem :

I went AFK for some time and when I came back I found my computer in Windows Boot Recovery screen.

After some repeated troubles trying to boot, I decided to try on Linux. I managed to boot and log but after a few moments the PC froze and had to force shutdown.
PC has no problem to POST, and every piece of hardware was correctly displayed in the BIOS.

Troubleshooting:

After several attemps with sfc in command line I finally managed to boot and log into Windows Safe Mode with network.

Everything seemed to work fine in Safe Mode, and checking the drivers in devicemanager showed some warnings related to a bunch of drivers.
I disabled/deleted many of them, rebooted the computer and did managed to log into Windows in normal mode.

I launched Armoury Crate and reinstalled  the Wifi Mediatek Driver (I need that driver to connect my controller in bluetooth mode and play comfortably).

After the installation, I rebooted and had the same issues again. I did the previous Safe Mode steps again and deleted only the Wifi Driver this time. This time again I did manage to boot in normal mode after that.

I am now currently stuck at this point and I would please need help to know if I can get my Wifi and Bluetooth working again, and if possible, how.

I'd be glad to give you more informations and thank you for reading.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Hi @Zeto

Are you able to provide a URL to the driver that you think is causing the issue?

Hello,

I'm not sure about the actual URL that is used to download the driver, I'm using Armoury Crate.

There it is stated that it's the : Mediatek wifi driver 3.4.0.1063

I suppose you should be able to find the URL with this information (and I think it's better than posting an URL to a possibly malicious website)

Thank for looking into it

Ok, are you able to rollback the system using System Restore? Perhaps download the driver from a different source?

Hello @Zeto

Could you please clarify if this issue occurred after the PC was first built or after using it for some time and occurred following any recent changes, such as a BIOS update or component replacement?
Kindly remove the multi-boot system drive and test the results with only the Windows environment, as the TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI only supports this specific configuration.

Additionally, we noticed that the BIOS version currently in use differs significantly from the latest version available on the official support page. As part of the troubleshooting process, we recommend evaluating whether a BIOS update is necessary.
Please also ensure that both the BIOS and all relevant drivers are installed using the versions provided on the TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI support page to help maintain system compatibility and stability.

Thank you.

I have a similar, if not the same issue with a media tek wifi driver issue.  Blue screens with DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL when loading/starting mtkwl6ex.sys.   I can post more info tomorrow if anyone is interested.  I have a strix G16 laptop (2025).

Hello everyone,

Apologies for the delayed answer.

@Silent_Scone I tried to restore the computer to a date prior to the problem. The restoration process seemingly froze, and the computer rebooted on its own. I had a popup message after logging in and it stated that the restoration failed.

Regarding the manual installation of the driver downloaded from the link you provided, it also failed. Similarly, the process froze and failed midway with error code 10.

@Jiaszzz_ROG
Truthfully, I am not sure. I've been running this config for more than 2 years (acquired roughly around january 2023). The dualboot is not recent and has been there for at least a year.
I did not have any component replacement or BIOS update recently. I know for sure though that Windows Updates are tedious because of the dualboot; but it somehow always ended up installed correctly.

I'm quite convinced that the problem is hardware as it causes BOTH OS to crash.
In fact even though you say that the TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI only support Windows OS, I've rarely encountered any problem running this config on the Linux OS. Anyway, I'll get rid of the dual boot, clean the partitions and boot entries.

I'll then check to see if it solves the problem. However, could you kindly explain why a Linux-based OS is not supported?

If it fails, I'll try updating the BIOS and drivers and let you know.

As always, thank you for your help.

Like with most issues, it's a process of elimination. The fact that System Restore crashes tends to make me think the driver isn't necessarily the problem.

I too suspect that there's nothing wrong with the driver; but I'm well inclined to think that there's a hardware/firmware problem related to the device.

I suppose that it is specifically related to the Wifi/Bluetooth part, as I'm able to have wired connection. I'm taking a wild guess but I think that the restoration failed precisely when trying to restore the WiFi driver and thus trying to access/communicate with the WIFi part of the device.

Anyway I still have to do what I said in my previous post, I'll probably do it this week-end.
