VIDEO_TDR_ERROR after upgrading Z790 BIOS to 2801

Hi everyone, first time posting, but I am getting desperate for some help.  My wife and I run a small business and I've been mostly out of commission since Monday.  I'm having major issues with the upgrade to BIOS 2801.  I only recently heard about Intel's 0x12B fix for Vmin shift vulnerabilities for 13th and 14th gen processors.  As soon as I became aware of the issue, I updated my BIOS.

The issues started there.  Specifically, it is an issue the seems to be related to my NVIDIA graphics card and drivers.  My screen goes black at random moments (seems to be application/load agnostic) and I have to restart using the desktop's power button.  It's a VIDEO_TDR_ERROR.

"Unable to load image nvlddmkm.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for nvlddmkm.sys"

I have opened a support ticket with NVIDIA support and have followed just about every graphics card/driver troubleshooting step imaginable with no luck.  I've been relegated to operating in limited fashion from Safe Mode with Networking.  I think it's probably time to start focusing more on the BIOS in my troubleshooting effort.

I've never been one to care about overclocking and messing with default BIOS settings, so there's never been anything changed there.  I'm mostly wondering whether anyone more experienced and knowledgeable with the Z790 (I'm on the ProArt Creator with WIFI) board and BIOS has some thoughts about what may have changed with the recent update and whether there are any settings within BIOS that I can play with that may help me troubleshoot/narrow down the problem.

I've extracted several error logs and will be happy to provide any details/system specs that would be useful to anyone who has some ideas that may help.

Thank you!

I am getting the exact same thing in the same timeline.  Lots of Video_Tdr_Error message in both Windows 10 and Windows 11.  I wiped my computer thinking maybe i had a virus causing this even though I had Bitdefender installed.  Please let me know what you find out.  I actually ordered another Nvidia video card today (currently installed RTX 4080 Super) a RTX 3080 12GB to see if my card is going out.  My system worked flawlessly before my attempted BIOS upgrade, now its currently a doorstop.

I am sorry to hear that you’re dealing with this issue, but it’s a bit of a relief to know I haven’t gone insane!
Sounds like we are in the same boat at this point. I also did a full wipe and reinstall of Windows and have exhausted all of my non-hardware related troubleshooting options. Doing some swap testing for the GPU and then moving on to other parts as necessary this weekend.
Will report back here with any findings.

Well I removed my ProArt 4080 Super Card today and replaced it with an Asus 3060 12GB card and it is running like a champ.  No errors!  So, I am going to RMA my 4080 card and when it comes in replace the 3060. It appears in my case it was the video card, unfortunately.  I will post if things change but I seem to have the issue fixed at this point.

Thank you for keeping me updated!

I was also able to confirm today that there is a hardware issue with my GPU.  I will be trying my luck at the warranty process and sending it in to Gigabyte.

Suppose it's possible that the issues we faced following the BIOS update are coincidental, but I'll leave this as a note of caution here about the update for anyone with NVIDIA hardware and a Z790 ProArt board.

Hi Ceige, any news about your RMA?  I sent mine in, but Gigabyte is trying to tell me that it's finding no issues with the product.  Wondering if you've had better luck or gotten a proper diagnosis at this point.  Very unsure what to do and I'm worried my GPU is about to become a very expensive paperweight.

To anyone who may be following this thread, I'd encourage you to check this one out as well:

0x00000116 VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE Asus Z790 Creator on ... - Republic of Gamers Forum - 1067876

Seems many others are having the issue and that thread seems to confirm there is a problem starting with BIOS version 2505.  Other posters have suggested successfully working around the issue by either downgrading to BIOS version 2504 or using the NVIDIA control panel to change Power management mode from Normal to Prefer maximum performance. (Manage 3D settings > Global Settings > Power management mode > Prefer maximum performance).

I'll be trying the later option first with the hope that I don't have to downgrade my BIOS and risk frying the CPU.

Any attention from ASUS on this would also be appreciated.
