T705 Stuck In PCIe 4?

Freakyfreak87

I have a z790 Apex Encore and I have a Gen5 T700 and T705, on the latest BIOS.  When I try and use my t705, it reads Gen4 only.

I've tried setting manual PCIe lanes for the Gen5 slot to Gen5 and seeing bifurcation to GPU and M.2, no matter what I do it stays in Gen4, but if I put my t700 in the Gen5 and apply the same settings, it'll run in Gen5, but I have to go into BIOS and manually set the Gen5/bifurcation settings then it'll read the t700 as gen5 and run as such.

But no matter what I do with the t705, if refuses to run in Gen5 in the Gen5 slot, I've seen some post on Google that haven't necessarily came to a conclusion on how to fix it.

That is in m.2_1 slot, I believe that message is because I'm running bifurcation mode in GPU+M.2, it's directly installed in M.2_1, as stated in a previous reply, this only and to be happening so far with you drive, my T700 when I tried it in the same slot, would sometimes read as Gen4 in windows as well, but changing the bifurcation settings and system agent settings to Gen5 ensured that drive was running at Gen5, but those tricks aren't working for the t705 😞.

Hi @Freakyfreak87 , what do you have installed in your PCIEX16(G5)_1 slot?

As I mentioned in my response, I have not seen the latest Z790 board UEFI BIOS reporting M.2_1 as PCIEX16(G5)_1. That is why I said it is strange for me to see it shown this way. Are you on the latest BIOS version i.e. 1301?

Since Slient_Scone has the same board as you, he will be able to confirm if your board shows this information differently than Z790 DARK HERO or other Z790 series boards.

I have my 4090 in that specific slot, and when I boot into Windows it shows it's ruining at X8 speed and not x16, so I'm assuming somehow my Gen5 nvme is obviously splitting the lanes, but not getting Gen5.

And yes I'm on the latest bios 1301

Reset CMOS and it's now showing in M.2_1, but even then, changing the particular slot to Gen5 5 manually and trying all bifurcation settings, it still always boots as Gen4 😭

Hi @Freakyfreak87 , I glad to hear that a CMOS reset at least started to report the information correctly (or as expected). Can you also explain what do you mean that it is still boots as GEN4? Possibly with a screenshot will be better.

My best guess is that you maybe seeing X4 in grey text. That text is showing how many PCIe lanes are being used and not the speed or generation of these lanes. See screenshot below from my Z790 Dark Hero board

My M.2_1 gets 4 PCIe lanes from the CPU which is shown as x4 text in grey text above the speed selection dropdown where I have selected by slot speed to run at Gen5. I can prove that my drive is running at Gen5 by doing a quick CrystalDiskMark test showing that my speeds are above the maximum speed limits of Gen4. I am not able to get advertised Gen5 Crucial speeds but it does go over Gen4 and that is how I know my drive works as configured.

I hope this helps you move forward towards resolving your issue.

I did not mean to hit the solution botton, as my issue still persists as it does with others I've seen on this forum.

And what I mean is if I set bifurcation to anything be it:

Auto [8X/8X] or GPU+M.2, and set M2_1 In the system agent tab and boot, my nvme in CrystalDiskInfo will state (PCI 4.0 x4|PCI 5.0 x4 capable) and Crystaldiskmark shows the drive only getting up to just over 7,000/7,000 meaning it's running in Gen4.

Even hwinfo reports it as running in Gen4 x4 at 16.5GT/S, meaning the system isn't for some reason allowing the drive to boot and run in Gen5, whereas the issue isn't there if I swap the drive with the t700, just the t705, no matter what bios settings, the drive is not being recognized in Windows as running in Gen5 even tho something like crystaldiskinfo shows it's capable of PCIe5 x4

Hi @Freakyfreak87 whenever you get a chance, can you please post your System Summary screenshot from the HWiNFO tool? It is a FREEWARE tool and also comes in portable version where you do not need to install anything. Please use the HWiNFO64.exe file to get your System Summary screen which will show all the storage that is connected to your system.

I'm not at home currently, but my screenshot looks very similar to yours with the Gen5 drive in HWInfo, but again I'm things live crystaldiskinfo and mark, it's showing as and running as a Gen4, similar to the issues like at this link, but it's for the t705 and not the t700

Hi @Freakyfreak87 like I said once you get a chance please post a screenshot of the tools you are using and the information you are seeing. That will help us get a better understanding of your situation.

The situation it almost identical to the person in the thread I linked, t705, not t700 is in my Asus z790 Apex Encore M.2_1 slot, system agent configuration M.2_1 Link Speed manually set to Gen5, bifurcation on auto or GPU+M.2, boot into Windows and load both crystaldiskinfo and Crystaldiskmark, nvme is showing up as PCI 4.0 4x/PCI 5.0 4x capable just like in the screenshots in the thread I linked, and running Crystaldiskmark nets me Gen4 speeds on my t705 in M.2_1.  Drive runs just fine in my buddies system with another Asus board running BIOS 2301 on ROG Z790 gaming wifi.  So it's not the drive, it's either some kind of bios conflict or bad slot, but that wouldn't explain why I can run the t700 in the same slot and it registers and runs at Gen5 speeds applying the same bios settings.
