STRIX Z790-H BIOS-update 2402 just "semi-bricked" my system.

Hello,

I have a few months old custom system with a Intel i7 14700K CPU - so obviously I wanted to update the BIOS on my ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-H GAMING WIFI - motherboard asap.

So, yesterday I downloaded the latest released BIOS - version 2402 - for my CPU and updated the system. Yep, got the warning about Bitlocker and verified that I did not have it enabled on this system. So I continued with the upgrade and it restarted.

But after the restart, it could not find a system (Win11) to boot at. I could enter BIOS, so it was not totally bricked. And when checking settings, all my SDDs were shown in the setup.

I tried to repair the system - but it failed no matter how I tried.

Eventually I thought that I had to bite the bullet and just re-install the system. As a (retired) IT-professional, I do that every so often anyway. However, when trying to install the Win11 setup did not even find any storage units at all (part from the install USB. Really odd, since this worked perfectly just a few months ago.

So, I remade the USB-stick with the latest Win11 ISO-install - could still not find any units...

So, I reset all the BIOS settings to default - more or less just turning the XMP-feature off, tried again, but could still not find any units during setup...

So, I downloaded all the drivers for my system and used NTLite to have them included into the ISO-build together with the latest updates from Microsoft - but it could still not detect any storage units. 😢

and that is were my knowledge about how to sort this ended.

But it is really wierd, since the drives are shown in the BIOS, BIOS even states that one of them are bootable (c:/) - but the system cannot boot once started... and setup cannot even find them.

The only other things I noticed was that it presents the drives under the headline "RAID" on the first page - which I have never enabled (using the SSDs as three seperate drives). And when I check the storage settings - there is no RAID that is set up. But odd that it is labeled "RAID" in the first place. Because I could understand it would not work if the system suddenly thought they are a RAID but not configured as such in the first place. But then it should have said so on the storage-settings, right?

Anyhoo - please advice asap. I not only have hours of gaming planned this weekend, I need to do some work from home as well.

Cheers!

Hello @Roquen

Thank you for reaching out to us.
According to the "BIOS storage shows the SSDs - but in RAID???" image, having Intel Rapid Storage Technology set to "On" indicates that RAID is enabled.
If you do not require RAID, please set this option to "Off."
Regarding the issue of being unable to find the disk when installing OS, please refer to the following two FAQs to confirm if any steps may have been missed or to assist with troubleshooting.

We recommend removing all SSDs and hard drives, clearing CMOS, and then installing a new or existing single SSD in the M.2 slot without enabling XMP or any manual BIOS settings, then proceeding with the system installation and, if necessary, cross-testing with different M.2 slots.

Thank you.

Due to the ongoing regional holidays, my responses may be slightly delayed.
Thank you in advance for your patience 🙂
