STRIX Z790--A Gaming WIFI - 4x16G Memory Errors

Darkness1015
Level 7

I have tried 2 kits of 4x16G Corsair memory with this board. Both kits get memory errors with "Windows Memory Diagnostics" and BIOS x86Memtest. The first kit (CMH32GX5M2B6200C36W) isn't on the QVL and it was 2 separate purchases. So I purchased and tried the second kit (CMH64GX5M4B6600C32) which is on the QVL and shows 4 socket support.

Both kits run fine with no errors at 2x16G, errors are only seen with 4x16GB . I know tight timing/etc with DDR55 but the second kit (CMH64GX5M4B6600C32) is shown on the website as QVL and supporting 4 slots ?? What gives ? Can this board not support 4 slots ?

Hello, @Darkness1015

May I ask if the situation you described happened after any changes were made? For example, adjusting the BIOS settings or connecting an external device
Could you confirm your current BIOS version?
If you haven't updated to the latest version 1801 released on December 22, 2023, please consider updating and clearing the CMOS, then check again. Regarding the memory, are you currently using a 13th- or 14th-gen CPU?
When installing four memory modules, were you able to successfully boot into the system with the default BIOS settings and without overclocking the memory?

Thank you.

Processor is Intel 13900K.

No changes except adding/swapping memory. BIOS is 1801. Tried with resetting CMOS. Only BIOS change was enabling XMP. I tried XMP 1 and 2 with x86memtest. Both get memory errors with 4 sticks. No memory errors with 2 sticks. POST and boot to Windows 11 is fine with 2 or 4 sticks. I can try XMP auto with 4 sticks but the whole purpose of using this memory is because it’s on the motherboard QVL/HCL for XMP 3.0.

I also tried increasing the Memory Controller Voltage to 1.4v, CPU System Agent Voltage to 1.35v, VDDand VDDQ to 1.4v. Still errors with 4 sticks at XMP 1 and 2.

Hello, @Darkness1015

Due to the ongoing local holidays in our area, my response time may experience delays.
I apologize for any inconvenience the delayed replies may have caused.

As the ROG STRIX Z790-A GAMING WIFI released a new BIOS version 1904 on February 16, 2024, please consider updating and rechecking the memory overclocking settings.
Meanwhile, the memory parameters might vary slightly based on your current hardware configuration.
If the default XMP I values fail to achieve successful overclocking, we recommend trying manual adjustments.

Thank you.
