ROG Strix x570-e gaming wifi II boot issues B1 qcode

Hey All, I am having a rather random issue with my build. Ive had it for about 2 years now all purchased and had been working since oct 2022.

yesterday the 09/06/2024 I noticed that all screens were black except one which had the ROG icon and was spinning on "Preparing for Auto repair" i have not been able to get into windows yet.

I noticed the qcode on the motherboard was b1 which it still is. This pointed toward the issue being memory related or at least likely so. But i ran memtest86 and it found no issues (bootable usb). To be sure i also tried moving the dimms around and testing each stick individually as well as a stick I had from another machine i know worked. 

Issue persisted though.

Unplugged all usb devices, cleared cmos both with the pin short and the battery removal. (I did perform a minimal boot with only a keyboard plugged in and a single dimm and no other hdd's other than the os one, and a single monitor as well as the gpu.)

The strangest part is that it wont boot into a windows 11 media i created on a usb stick, I tested the media on a laptop just to be sure and it works. I also did update the BIOS, but that didnt fix the issue.

Any other Ideas would be awesome, I have not had any issues with the build since it put it together. This kind of randomly happened. I was using the machine for most of the day as well before it happened. I left for a while and came back and it was in this state.

OS Drive is a samsung 960pro nvme ssd

A quick update, I went and got a kit of memory that was listed on the official website for the board and the issue is still occurring. I purchased. CORSAIR - VENGEANCE LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz C18 - CMK32GX4M2D3600C18

it has the same b1 qcode as well

Hi @mrtacos2 I am sorry to hear about your troubles. What exact color of light do you see in the top right corner i.e. ITEM 19 in your board layout picture below.

How did you update your BIOS or run any memory tests? Are you able to get into BIOS but you cannot boot?

You should try a minimum system test to help isolate the issue. That test goes something like below:

  • Disconnect everything that is connected on back of your PC except, a keyboard, a mouse, a monitor and power cord.
  • Only have 1 memory stick in the A2 slot.
  • Keep your 1080TI Card since your CPU does not have integrated graphics unit built into it.
  • Remove all but 1 SSD/HDD drive. Typically either M.2_1 or M.2_2 drive is kept.

Now try to boot up.

It is possible that your graphics card has gone bad and not your memory which why I am requesting you to check the Q-LEDs (in the top right corner) along with Q-LED Code that you have provided. A system will not boot if it cannot detect a working graphics option.

 Not trying to be rude, but i described doing a minimal boot in the post already.. Ive edited the post to clarify that.

The system wont even post without a working gpu to my knowledge but its possible. 

The qled does not stay light up, so there is no led when it gets to that screen. The each take turns lighting up during the boot process, but once it gets to the spinning circle or preparing automatic repair screen none of them are lit up.

I ran the memory test with a usb stick that has memtest86 on it. Not sure why that one boots but the other mentioned USBs dont. 

I downloaded the bios version from the product page and manually updated the bios with a usb stick. I followed the instructions to rename the file using the rename application that comes with the installer then copied the file onto a usb stick and selected that when selecting the ez flash option under tools.

Nothing to be rude about. It seems to be a mistake on my part for not fully understanding your original post. Thanks for clarifying it.

Since you have installed the latest BIOS, have you made any changes like enable EXPO etc. or you are running with your BIOS defaults (same as F5)? With F5 defaults are you still not able to boot using the Windows 11 media from the USB? Which USB port are you using for your stick i.e. front panel USB ports on your case or rear panel USB ports on your board? Also have you connected the stick directly without any extension wire, hub or adaptor? Sometimes these additional items in the connection path can introduce weird issues.

Have you tried connecting some other non OS drive as the only drive and remove your OS drive and then tried to boot into USB Drive? Maybe your OS Drive has gone bad causing these issues so if you remove this drive, can you boot with USB Media that you have already confirmed is working.

All Bios settings are running at defaults, only things that might have been updated are CMS settings to allow legacy boot devices.

As for the USB Boot, ive tried with almost every port. both on the front hub of the case as well as directly into the motherboard. All the same result.

I didnt remove the physical storage of the OS SSD, but it did remove it from the boot options when testing the USB bootable media. I disabled the other boot drives and only had the usb as an option. Even if the hard drive was failing or failed shouldnt booting from a USB like the win 11 boot drive or hirens mini OS still work? I can try removing it if you think its really a factor. 

I forgot to Add that I did manage to boot into windows once but only to the sign in page and it froze up pretty much right away. I have no idea how it happened honestly and I have not been able to repeat it. From what I remember I think i was trying to get into winRe with f12 at boot and it looped the rog logo a few times and went into windows but froze right away. Havent been able to make it happen again though even doing the same thing several times.

Hi @mrtacos2 yes physically removing the drive (assuming it has failed) will certainly help. You can also go into BOOT Menu and DISABLE FAST BOOT as well as DISABLE LOGO DISPLAY. The UEFI BIOS injects ASUS routines into boot configuration. I am not sure how these options might be impacting your situation. Disabling them will certainly have the probability to show something extra on your screen. Keep in mind that once you disable both these boot configurations you will NOT see the typical ASUS logo with a message to press DEL or F2 key to enter BIOS. You will then have to remember this information.

Since, we are simply trying to find the root cause at this time, I do not believe this will be an issue but I do want to give you heads up on what you will see differently during the boot sequence.

Hey so i got around to testing those things out. I pulled the hard drive out and testing getting into the win11 usb with no luck.

I then tried disabling fastboot and the display logo. these did not help either. Though it does seem to fail to boot to the UEFI partion of the usb and then boots into the non UEFI version. Which just hangs on the windows11 icon with spinning. Basically does the same thing as before.

This is also running with the minimal boot. single monitor and just a keyboard attached. 

I am leaning towards this being a motherboard issue as in my experience CPU issues tend to be a lot louder. Meaning that if it was constantly rebooting or hard freezing on screens and such. Thoughts on that? I am going to look around to see if I can find someone to drop the cpu into a rig and verify it boots but im not sure i will be able to. I do have a ticket open with Asus already but I havent heard anything back just yet since the initial escalation.

According to the ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING WIFI II user manual, the Q-code B1 during boot indicates 'Runtime Set Virtual Address MAP End.'
Could you confirm how you determined that the B1 error is related to a memory issue?

Regarding the 'Preparing for Auto Repair' message, we recommend following the steps outline in [Windows 11/10] Troubleshooting - Automatic Repair (Startup Repair) on Boot to resolve the issue.
And since you mentioned the issue occurs intermittently, we suggest checking if a system reset while keeping your files is needed, cross-testing the SSD/HDD slots or ports, and, if necessary, cross-testing with a different system drive.

EDIT: 
Based on your subsequent description, if you suspect the CPU might be faulty, you can try reinstalling it to check for correct installation and any bent pins or damage, or consider cross-testing with another CPU.
If you decide to send the motherboard for inspection and have any concerns or issues during the process, please DM with your personal information and product serial number, service number, and RMA number.

I found a few posts online that mentioned that step in the bios boot process to be related to memory. But those may be incorrect thats just what i was able to find since theres no real data that I can find from asus explaining it. Also This is what the qcode looks like. This is b1 right, or does that appear to be like 61?

I think you miss understand, I cannot boot into windows period. This includes winRE and windows 11 usb installation media as well as other bootable usb. So i couldnt perform any sort of repair or windows re-install if i wanted to on the system. The issue is not intermittent, It happens every time it boots, it will either boot into the rog logo and a spinning circle or if I restart the machine a few times in succession it will go to the auto repair screen, every time one of those two things.

I did reseat the cpu already and check for those things. As i mentioned previously CPU issues tend to be far more intrusive like constant reboots or hard freezes, which those are not happening. But I am still looking for a way to get it tested in anycase.
