ROG STRIX B850-I M2_1 ssd not recognized with RTX5090

bugs1
Level 8

I am experiencing an issue with my ROG STRIX B850-I GAMING WIFI motherboard where the M.2 SSD in the M2_1 slot is not detected at boot when my new RTX 5090 graphics card is installed.

System Configuration:

  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B850-I GAMING WIFI, bios version 1028
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • M.2 SSD (M2_1 slot): Corsair MP600 PRO XT 8TB
  • Previous Graphics Card (Working): NVIDIA RTX 3090
  • New Graphics Card (Issue present): NVIDIA RTX 5090

Problem Description:

  • With the RTX 3090 installed, the Corsair MP600 PRO XT in the M2_1 slot is detected correctly, and the system boots without issues.
  • After upgrading to the RTX 5090, the system no longer recognizes the SSD in the M2_1 slot during boot.
  • If the RTX 5090 is physically removed from the motherboard, the M.2 SSD is detected again, and the system can boot. This confirms the SSD is correctly mounted.
  • When booting from a USB stick with the RTX 5090 installed, the graphics card itself appears to initialize and function (display output is fine).

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • Confirmed the SSD works with the previous RTX 3090.
  • Confirmed the SSD is detected when the RTX 5090 is removed.
  • Updated motherboard BIOS to version 1028.

I've been able to figure it out! The backplate of the graphics card was pushing on the heatsink of the ssd. I assume this caused the ssd to electrically disconnect from the motherboard.

Hi @bugs1

Try BIOS 1053

Contains most recent AGESA Combi patch

9800X3D / 6400 CAS 28 / ROG X870 Crosshair / TUF RTX 4090

thanks @Silent_Scone for helping out with this. Your download link seems broken and I can't find this version on the support page for the mobo. Could you provide an updated link?

Sorry for the delay in responding. Unfortunately BIOS 1053 didn't help and I still suffer from exactly the same issue. Do you know if there's anything else I can try?

Also note that:

  • I'm connecting the graphics card directly to the slot(no riser cable).
  • Changing "Advanced/Onboard Device Configuration/PCIE Link Speed/PCIEX16(G5)" to "GEN 4" does not help.
