rog strix b650e-e- gaming wifi USB ports not working

There was a similar post a while back which is now closed.

I have this board with a 7950X3D and most of the red USB ports on the rear do not work. They provide power but no function. All the USB-C ports work just fine as do the black USB 2.0 ports.

I'm having more and more of them dropping off over time. Is this a known issue/faulty board?

Tried everything. Same results booting linux off a USB. All ports have power. It's as if the data lines are not connected.

Bios is currently 2413. About to update to 2613 to see if that solves anything.

Well Well Well - You Have Soved this Issue Finally for me after Months and Months of Issues - I had got a new Replacemen ROG STRIX B650E-E the 1st time it broke last January and then the new one ran well until June then the same thing so went Back Through all the Hundreds of posts in different ASUS and reddit posts. 95% of the time its been down to Case Hubs / NZXT Hub connections or external USB3 Hubs being coneccetd to the No6 USB-C pictured below. So Today Just pulled out the 4 Port USB-CHub I have in No6 and put it into No10 USB-C - Restarted and all is Working again All the Red USB 3 ports back to normal and the Hub working on 10 - So must be a Bios/Software issue here for this board which say's "Now you have a Hub connected I'm disconectiong the rear ports for you" So happy to have finally solved this - Hope It works for everyone else as well!

yo I have the same problem. but I figured out how to recreate it everytime. by any chance do you have something plugged on the higher usb-c gen 2 port?

I have yes. I've got a hub connected which I have on my desk. On the other red ports not above those ones, only one works. I've got another hub connected to the front panel USB-C via an adaptor. That gives me 12 ports on my desk total which is adequate but I'm concerned more ports will fail.

We are certainly not alone. A quick search of these forums show similar issues on B650 boards from Asus. I did update to 2613 BIOS with no change in functionality. My next move will be to remove the motherboard battery and unplug the PC overnight. I tried the CMOS clear and it only cleared the settings. Clock was still correct which led me to believe that the clear CMOS button does not do a full clean of the BIOS.

I'll update if it works.

what i found out was when i have my usb-c hub connected on the front usb-c port or the top usb-c on the back io (number 6 on the manual) it breaks some ports on the back. BUT if i plug my hub on the lower usb-c port (number 10 on the manual) or if I just unplug it completely, all my ports become functional again. this is certainly weird lol it seems like the B650E-E hates usb-c hubs 🤣

hey glad to help! @Richie91
unfortunately yea this is just a workaround, the port still hates hubs ahaha. but for some reason if I plug other type-c devices i have on the number 6 port, no problems occur. the problem only really occurs if it's a usb-c hub. also funny thing is I also have a nzxt hub that came with my AIO but luckily it doesn't cause any problems.

Most Annoying thing for me that it should be classed as Known issue with this and other ASUS Boards as well from other posts I found and either a Bios and or Software fix should fix the problem- They Must have Hundreds of Rma's for this issue and as we see Its all around the use of external or internal hubs. A single USB3 Drive works fine but to have 4 x Ports Shut down is not good. Anyways Fingers Crossed This is the problem solved and others will now be able to read the fix on their exisiting boards. I and many bought this board because of the High number of USB3/c Ports compared with competitors! Thank You Again Richie

Hello all,

We recommend cross-testing by connecting the devices directly to the motherboard ports without using the hub and checking for any potential restrictions or settings in power management.
If the BIOS and drivers are all current, clearing CMOS and checking power management do not reveal any restrictions, and the issue does not occur only under specific conditions like overheating, we suggest checking the power cable connection between the motherboard and PSU or cross-testing with a different PSU or system disk.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, please consider whether it may be necessary to arrange an RMA for further hardware inspection.

Thank you.

You need to check what I marked as the solution. It works. This is a design or BIOS issue. You most certainly know about this as there are plenty of examples in your forums. I suggest you relay this information up the food chain. I expect more from Asus than to mis read the data sheets for the AM5 platform. Mistakes happen but this should have been picked up in testing. For now I have used USB-A to C adapters for my USB-C hubs and got my red USB-A ports back.

If Asus ever do the right thing and issue a product recall, I would be happy to take up the offer.

Hello @doctorbunhead

We recommend referring to the relevant discussion threads USB ports on Asus Strix B650E-E not working properly and avoiding the use of hubs during testing.
If you have further concerns regarding the hardware, please send the motherboard for repair and DM me with the serial number and RMA number, as this involves personal information, and I will then track the details of the hardware inspection for you.

Thank you.
