ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO - BIOS Update Question

dancap
Level 7

Hi, I have never done a Bios update before and was preparing to do so over the weekend. My current Bios version is 0502 and it looks like there are 18 versions between where I am and the latest version (2801). So my question, Is it best/necessary to do every update between where I am and the latest version or is it safe to update to the latest version?

Hello @dancap

Thank you for reaching out to us. We apologize for the delayed response due to a public holiday in our region and any inconvenience this may have caused.
May I ask if the BIOS update is required due to a hardware change or a specific feature need?
Given the significant gap between your current version and the latest version, in addition to recommending that you back up important data, we suggest performing incremental updates to avoid prolonged update times or potential failures. For example, you could update from version 0502 to 0813, then to 0904, followed by 1303, 1801, 2002, 2301, and 2503, and finally update to version 2801.
Please also refer to the [Motherboard] How to update BIOS of the motherboard? (Including different generation CPUs) guide for further instructions.

Thank you.

Hi and thanks for getting back with me. After posting my question here and waiting over night, I decided to go ahead and ask around at other sources. I got corroborating answers from Reddit, CyberPower PC (where I purchased my PC), and a specialist at a local computer repair shop. Since they all pointed me in the same direction I updated my Bios Saturday without issue. I had always been nervous about doing a BIOS update because I had never done it before. I'm glad to have been forced confront my fear, so to speak.

To answer your question. The BIOS update was actually highly recommended by Blizzard. They were kind enough to notify everyone with specific Motherboard & CPU combinations via their Battle.net launcher of a potential instability that could only be resolved via updating the BIOS to the most current version. Since it seemed urgent enough to them, it seemed urgent enough to me to resolve in a timely manner.

Thanks again for getting back with me = )
