ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO BIOS 2503 - Slow Boot / Post times

Sentinal13
Level 9

Prior to updating to the latest BIOS my BIOS start times were sub 13 seconds on a restart, after this latest update to 2503 and 0x129 my Bios start time is +16 seconds with the same settings. This delay is even more pronounced when I try and access my bios using delete or F2 it appears to continue doing something in the back ground and takes an absolute age to get into the settings. Previously it was near instantaneous to get into the bios settings.  Has anyone else experienced these sorts of issues or any pointers ?

Yes, a longer wait time getting into the BIOS for sure. Unexplained weirdness all the way around.

  1. 2503 causes slow boot, it stops at Q-Code 92 for 20-30 seconds, so it is trying to initialize the PCI bus, and then MB displays Q-Code 99 after which continues to boot OS.
  2. Pressing DEL key on the boot, entering UEFI, has some extended delay time on BIOS 2503. Just the black screen for a long time and then it enters UEFI. On previous BIOS version it was almost instantly entering UEFI.
  3. I can't hide DEL/F2 BIOS messages like with previous BIOS versions.
  4. Windows 11 reports "Last BIOS time: 64.1 seconds". It is over 2 times longer then previous BIOS versions.
  5. When I revert back to previous BIOS all these issues go away.

The number of NVME Drives is part of the long boot process with the latest bios. Something is going on there for sure from my testing with all three onboard M.2 slots occupied. I see you have all 3 plus the addon card for two more so that explains why your boot time is 1 minute plus with the latest bios.

Even with just one M.2 Drive occupied by my OS nvme, the boot time with latest bios is still slower than my boot time with all onboard occupied using previous bios.

Not sure what is happening, but they have enough information to see that the M.2 slots + new bios are an issue.

There is a new BETA bios out today. Has anyone tried it?   Version 2602 Beta

Yes I just tried it and if anything, the boot up seems slightly longer.

Also noticed after Asus Logo / Windows loading screen, the keyboard and display go through a non typical series of flashing or initializing that I had not noticed before. It might be normal but at the very least, it is exaggerated in this bios version.

I have just tried the beta, and I have slower boot times and it doesn't show any improvements . Like RickJamesBish I noticed after Asus Logo / Windows loading screen, the keyboard and display go through a non typical series of flashing or initializing. It might be normal but at the very least, it is exaggerated in this bios version.  F2 or Delete Entry to the BIOS is also extended

UEFI/BIOS 2703 brings back fast booting again, like the versions before 2503.
With the same settings, I can confirm the following positive changes:

  • Entering UEFI/BIOS 2703 using 'systemctl reboot --firmware-setup' is instant again, no more delays.
  • After pressing DEL key on the boot enters UEFI/BIOS 2703 almost instantly.
  • Stable TestMem5 + Anta777 Extreme (x 3 cycles).
  • Windows 11 reports Last BIOS time: 11.3 seconds [using UEFI/BIOS 2703]

Thanks Asus.

Same for me on ROG STRIX Z790-F GAMING WIFI. Bios 2503 and newer causes incredibly long boot times. On 2402 it's normally fast. In addition, armory create has errors again. It completely removes ram from information. There is no information about speeds and temperature after the last update. Fun expert does not save settings. Normally a massacre. Terrible bugs at Asus last time.

Hello @topless2006

Thank you for reaching out to us.
Regarding the long boot time, could you please let us know approximately how many seconds it takes, and have you tried cross-testing with other slots or SSDs to see if there's any difference?
As mentioned previously, after updating the BIOS, the first few boot-ups might take longer due to changes in parameters or default settings that require re-training the memory or applying the new configurations. We suggest continuing to monitor the system during use.

For the Armoury Crate error, could you please provide the model number of your currently installed memory, and is it listed in the ROG STRIX Z790-F GAMING WIFI QVL?
Additionally, have you tried using the uninstall tool to remove and then reinstall Armoury Crate to see if it can recognize the memory information again?
If the issue persists, kindly record and provide the relevant logs and below info for us to verify further.
- For log operation steps, please refer to the FAQ "Q5: What is App Diagnostics? (New Feature)" and ensure that you've checked the "Record Log" option before replicating the issue.
- The contents of BIOS settings (or in all default settings) and screenshots of BIOS main page
- The brand, model, and installation slots or ports of the CPU, GPU, RAM (with part number), SSD/HDD, and PSU
- The OS version, OS build, and screenshots of Armoury Crate update center
Additionally, since this is a different topic from the current discussion thread, we recommend replying in DM to avoid confusion.

Thank you.
