ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero Bios 1801 has throttled my CPU while stress testing.

While stress testing with the new Bios 1801, my CPU throttles down from 5.7Ghz to 5.4Ghz during the stress test. While immediately following the stress test the CPU ramps back up to 5.7Ghz on all cores, except 2 cores which alternate between 5.7Ghz and 6.0Ghz. Which equates to about 4% to 5% drop in overall performance while my computer is under a full load. I'm curious what was changed in the Bios to cause the CPU to throttle the CPU speed down.

Not enough Info. What does HWINFO64 show is throttling? There are several section that will show the sources of throttling (temperature, voltage, power, current, etc.).

Hi everyone,

I’m not very knowledgeable in this area, but I think my issue might be somewhat related to yours. I’ve noticed some strange behavior with my CPU after updating the BIOS to version 1801. Specifically:

  • On the High Performance Power Plan, my CPU runs at 3.1 GHz during Time Spy Extreme (3DMark), with temperatures around 40°C, but on the Balanced Power Plan, it hits 5.9 GHz, with temperatures between 60–80°C. This seems odd, as I’d expect the performance plan to yield higher GHz.
  • These changes became apparent about a week after installing the BIOS update, while playing Helldivers 2. The game felt laggy and had noticeably fewer FPS.
  • I’ve ensured that all power plan settings are at their defaults and haven’t made any custom changes. Unable to resolve the issue, I reinstalled Windows, thinking there might be corrupted or conflicting files. However, the issue persists.
  • I’ve also reset the BIOS to default settings (I previously had XMP 1 enabled), but the problem remains.
  • If I play games or run 3DMark on the Balanced Power Plan, everything works as expected. However, switching to High Performance Plan consistently results in lower GHz values.

Does anyone have suggestions on what else I can try to resolve this? I’d appreciate any advice!
