Hi Tom,
If you have a service case can you forward me the correspondence? Clearly there is an issue wherever it may be.
However, I've not had any problems on Intel with the 1TB model as per the other thread you responded to. Nor have I been able to replicate the issue on X670

sure its case #N2311027281-0006
have you tested a X670E board with the CT4000T700SSD5 ? So its 1:1, as it could be using a different controller on the NVME, firmware or something.
Have you also tested M2_2 ? When i put my T700 in that port it only detects as PCI4 never PCI5 even if i force it.

That would be amazing if you could test.
I spent about 3hrs trying different configs last night.
As per the manual page Xii it states "When installing a PCIe M.2 SSD we recommend installing it into the M.2_1 slot" which i have been testing with.
I took the NVME out and tried it in slot M.2_2 as this is also a PCI5 SLOT (there are 2 on the board)
When in this slot i couldnt get the drive to be seen as a PCI 5 x 1 drive it would only see it as PCI 4 x 1. (it worked but was like 900mb/s)
I put it back into M.2_1 slot and it was reconized as PCI 5 x1 drive. Speeds still poor.
After several clean installs of windows with Microsoft storage NVME drive and also testing the one provided by Crucial speeds was still poor.
I tried mutiple configurations in the BIOS of forcing GEN5 and GEN4 for the other slots changing from a mix of Auto to hard set with no difference.
I saw in the Event Log in windows allot of "nvme The IO operation at logical block address 0x22d94c48 for Disk was retried."
even when in slower speed mode the system feels "sticky" and stuff just doesnt load, for example i installed steam and loaded Doom it just wouldnt load, didnt even attempt to load but Command and Conquer did. it was like its in some type of limp mode.
I decided to test my WD850 Black (i have 2 of these a 1TB & 2TB) both PCI4. Put them in and they seemed to work fine on the drive i was getting 7gb/s & 5gb/s write so well within spec, so that would point to the motherboard working on PCI4 but i would need to test another PCI 5 drive to be sure its not the board.
Any help here would be great or do i have a £500 paper weight !
Screen shot attached.

Are you on UEFI 1709?
Make sure to download the latest chipset drivers, too: https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am5/x670e

Try this CMO profile for the Hero for 1709. Comes from a system with a 2TB T700 and working without issue (doubt it will help but worth a try).
Be mindful of the curve optimiser presets and memory, might want to remove those. Hopefully I'll get time to check on the Extreme tomorrow.

If i put the settings in the BIOS to M.2_1 Link mode GEN5
Windows will crash and feel very sluggish - crystal disk mark is max 6000mb/s read and 2000 write.
if i put into GEN 4 system is fine but only getting gen 4 speeds of 6000/6000 r+w
How can i get full gen 5 speeds? what setting should i be changing?
Motherboard is a Asus ROG 670E Hero

Try putting the gfx card in slot 2.
