I've ordered a different brand/size NVMe drive to test this port with the newer BIOS versions. Will provide an update sometime next week most likely.

Update: My new NVMe drive (a gen4 PNY CS2241 4TB) is being detected without issues in BIOS version 1709, chipset slot M.2_4.

So it appears Asus has introduced a bug of some sort into the BIOS of this motherboard starting with version 1516 that stops detecting a Kingston NV2 1TB (and I assume more / other drives too) in the chipset slot.

I've moved the NV2 to an external enclosure to become a portable SSD (which of course works fine there), but the issue is not fixed and sadly contacting official Asus support was utterly useless here. Fortunately for me I now don't have to worry about this issue any more.

So to the people from 2024 and onwards who find this thread, blame Asus, bother their support, and if your NVMe still isn't being detected, you'll either have to roll back the BIOS to an earlier version (1416) or put a different SSD in M.2_4 slot (and the one that goes missing in another slot).

Confirm whether the issue persists after clearing the CMOS? This includes no EXPO/XMP and complete defaults and also which BIOS revision the issue occurs on.

May I ask if the Kingston SNV2S/1000G 1TB Gen 4 PCIe NV2 is able to be recognized in the system when it is installed in the m.2_4 slot and isn't recognized in the BIOS? If so, could you provide relevant screenshots?
Additionally, have you attempted to cross-test the Kingston NVMe SSD in other M.2 slots or clear the CMOS before attempting to recognize the issue again?
For further verification, could you please provide the brand and model of your current GPU, RAM, HDD, system drive, external enclosure, and PSU, as well as the OS version and OS build?

Please also share images of the Kingston SNV2S/1000G 1TB Gen 4 PCIe NV2 correctly recognized in the 1416 BIOS, an image showing it not being recognized in the 1709 BIOS, and a video showing the Kingston NVMe SSD being installed in an external enclosure and being correctly recognized in the 1709 BIOS for our further investigation.

Furthermore, please note that some specific BIOS versions may only allow rollback of BIOS versions via BIOS flashback and not through EZ flash.

I am afraid I will not be able to provide any screenshots or videos from the old config. No offense but the support team had 2 months to reach out for that, here or via the ticket. I will not be disassembling, swapping drives back and forth and flashing old BIOSes again on my primary PC again just to satisfy this late request. Sorry. I hope you understand. I don't want to sound rude but I value my time and I've spent a lot of it already as you can see from the initial post. I'll happily answer all your other questions though.

When not detected in BIOS, the Kingston NVMe was not able to be recognized in the system (Windows 11) either. It was not showing up in Device Manager at all. I did not cross-test the Kingston NVMe in slots other than M.2_4 due to complexity of system disassembly. I've cleared CMOS many times as part of troubleshooting.

Apologies, as mentioned I am no longer able to provide any screenshots.

I can, however, with full certainty say that:

• the Kingston NVMe was being detected on 1416 (and at least 3 previous versions) on both POST screen (after CMOS reset) and was visible in BIOS / Advanced / NVMe drives section. I.e. I was able to start a short SMART test on it via BIOS.
• On 1516, 1607 and 1709, there would simply be no entry for the drive there, as if it did not exist, only the OS drive was visible there. CMOS reset was performed after each BIOS flashing.
• The PNY 4TB drive has no issues being detected on BIOS 1709 in slot M.2_4. I can provide a screenshot of the drive being detected if desired.
• The external enclosure is simply a USB-C 3.2 NVMe enclosure so it would be detected on any system at this point, even phones, but I can provide a video of that if you insist. Drive SMART status is healthy.

Furthermore, please note that some specific BIOS versions may only allow rollback of BIOS versions via BIOS flashback and not through EZ flash.

Indeed, I was made aware of this after trying to downgrade from 1709 for the first time, at least now I know that BIOS Flashback works 😄

After confirmation from the relevant department, we have verified that the Kingston NV2 2TB can be successfully recognized in both the BIOS and the system.
We suggest contacting the SSD manufacturer to confirm whether there are alternative firmware versions available for verification or to enhance compatibility.
Alternatively, you may consider whether it is necessary to send the Kingston NV2 1TB for repairs.
