Random crashes with X670E Hero

Before i go into the nuts and bolts let me spec out what i have.

X670E Hero - BIOS 1303
7950X3D
ZOTAC 4090 AMP AIRO
G.SKILL Z5 Neo EXPO 32GB 6000MHz F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5NR
CPU and GPU custom watercooled (EKWB parts)

So the other night while attempting to play Jedi Survivor the onboard Bluetooth disappeared (not in device manager etc), odd I thought but not a deal breaker and not worth the 2 months i was quoted i would be without the board, anyway my fault finding was as follows:-

Applied my clonezilla image of my machine in case it was a rogue update, Image is from 2 month ago when the system was built (clean image OS, drivers and AV) but the device was still missing.

Clean build of Windows 11 Pro from freshly downloaded ISO, no device.

Reached out to ASUS who said run the diagnostics in MyASUS app but there are none.

I had some new fans which i was waiting on installing on my Rads and thought no better time than now, they all connect to a fan controller so all i did was unplug 6 and plug in 6 to the same controller (all noctuas) and tidy the cabling, now the bluetooth is showing again but randomly the PC now just shuts down, no BSOD logs but 6008 IDs in event viewer, to power back on I need to either turn off the PSU and turn back on (Seasonic TX1300) or use the onboard ReTry button.

I'm at a loss and kinda out of ideas so any help is welcomed.

Hello, @Flakey

Thank you very much for providing detailed information and logs.
I have compiled and forwarded them to the relevant department for further analysis.
Could you please clarify which specific games you are referring to when you mention "playing old games" and "games under heavy load"?
Regarding the four sets of log files provided in the link, do they cover the period from before the automatic shutdown occurred until the system could be restarted?
What is the duration of each recorded set? For example, are they several minutes or several hours long?
Meanwhile, please check the top right corner of the screen and kindly share the details requested in the PM inbox.

Thank you!

> Could you please clarify which specific games you are referring to when you mention "playing old games" and "games under heavy load"?

With "old games", I mean Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (not technically old, but remake of a 20+ year old game and not too demanding). With "games under heavy load" I mean mainly Hogwarts Legacy on Ultra (no RT), output on 3.440 x 1.440 (HDR on OLED, but should not matter for performance).

> Regarding the four sets of log files provided in the link, do they cover the period from before the automatic shutdown occurred until the system could be restarted?

Yes, the folder name "before YYYY-MM-DD HH_mm_ss" means that at that timestamp, the PC had been restarted from the crash (Kernel-Power event in event viewer). The timestamp of the log start is reflected in the file names and the logs themselves also contain detailed timestamps. All four logs are from before crashes and end when the crash happens (due to the crash).

> What is the duration of each recorded set? For example, are they several minutes or several hours long?

My AIDA64 is configured to roll over logs every hour, so at most one hour. Since they are all ended by the crash, they should all be less than one hour long. Please also note that the statistic files are often corrupt and the logs might end with a non-text binary line, which is data that failed to be written to disk due to the crash happening while AIDA64 was writing it.

I will check and get back to you.

I would also be fine running the hardware outside the case. Even though I already re-seated everything once to make sure there are no additional contact points between the motherboard and the case.

I am a bit surprised that Asus seems to care enough to build a system to replicate the issue, and at the same time they don't just ask people to send them their entire system. I mean, they don't have to pull a GN and buy known broken hardware at retail price, but paying for shipping should not hurt.

To that point, unless they just haven’t stated they have - why don’t they use the TX-1300 in their test setup? Most commonly referenced PSU model showcasing this problem.

They had me send in my board. I hope they get to the bottom of whatever issue it is. I hate giving up my PC for a few weeks, but if it gets fixed then worth it.

I see, glad you took the bullet. I assumed you just sent it back as broken with a general RMA, I did not know they asked you to send it back related to this case. But if they are aware of the connection to it, let's hope it helps them to reproduce it.

In the meantime, I had another crash last night. I added the logs to the Google drive ("before 2023-07-08 00_09_01"). I was in a Discord call. The other person was sharing their screen. Otherwise I think I had like 3 browser tabs open and nothing else running.

They didn't ask me to send it back ,  not from this thread. I had opened a separate ticket trying to troubleshoot on my own. I wanted to know if I flashed back to 0922 or 1003 if they would still warenty this board and cpu.

The specific question I kept asking was if I could flash it back and limit the soc to see if it was a bios update or not. I don't remember having this issue at all until the flood of bios updates started rolling out on soc limits.

I had noticed in bios 1202 there is a note about thermal monitoring and to me that's what I think of when I see the issue happen. It's like the board shut itself down to protect against damage and like a breaker when tripped we have to completely cut power off then back on.

instead we went down their troubleshooting path and after the 2nd exchange they asked for the board. I really hate sending it off for such a random issue especially knowing I am likely going to get a "referb" in exhange.

Same Problem here.. also on Seasonic Prime 1300, 7800X3D, etc etc...

I fixed all my issues, by buying an MSI x670e Carbon Wifi board - no more BSOD, no more stuterinng on bootup for 5 minutes in Windows, no more USB dropouts with "unable to initalize USB device" in device manager - along with a long list of other issues.

I am DONE with ASUS, RMAing the Crosshair and I'll sell the replacement on eBay (assuming it works).  This is the final straw in a long line of product fails, and I've spend ALOT of money on ASUS gear:

Maximus Hero COD edition (intel z390) - buggy from day one, died in 3 months

TWO differet SRTIX FLARE Keyboard that started repeating characters typed Excessively within 2-3 months)

A Strix 2080Ti that contantly crashed.

If this was a case of "I got a bad Crooshair Hero board) I would RMA it and not feel this way, but with all the failures above and the fact that SO MANY people have the same issues with this board - no thanks.  I want to actually USE my PC, not diagnose ASUS's crappy products all day.

Either their quality control is non-existant, OR they don't bother actually TESTING their products in a real-worls use scenario - or both - I don't care, I am done!

Enjoy !

I get your frustration with ASUS. I already kept the stuff I bought from them for this build to a minimum (also because of the recent controversy, which sadly I heard of too late). But I was happy with my previous AMD board, so I gave it another go. Depending on how this issue here is handled, it will be my last piece of hardware from them, though. Although, I personally would not be going with MSI either (just some bad experience in the distant past, maybe they got better).

Either way, the issues you describe seem to have no overlap with the main issue reported here. I only had some minor issues with bluetooth that were fixed by properly installing the antenna and some BSODs due to an audio device not completing power IRPs in time. Not sure about the latter yet, but Windows does all kinds of crap when it turns off my screen (e.g. Discord audio stops working etc.). Anyways, my real issue are the sudden crashes. If those went away, I would consider this system very stable and usable.

ASUS' software seems a bit questionable. Until recently, their weird service crashed every ~30 minutes, causing my LEDs to flicker and Windows to show repeated notifications about aura performance mode. The issue is gone now, but I also had a bad experience using Armoury Crate. Anyways, this stuff is luckily optional.

I hope you have better luck with your new hardware.
