RAM, BIOS, and Stability Issues After X670e-F Build Upgrade – Need Guidance

I built my system about a year ago. Here are the specs:
X670e-F Gaming / 7900X / 32 GB (2x16GB G.Skill Trident Z5 6400 CL32 1.40 [F5-6400J3239G16GX2]) / RTX 4080.

I’ve encountered some issues and have a few questions regarding my build:

1. Does it make any difference to use XMP (DOCP) RAM profiles instead of EXPO profiles on an AM5 system?
I’ve noticed that when I boot the system, the yellow DRAM LED stays lit for an unusually long time before the system fully boots.

2. About a month ago, I started experiencing some system instabilities, including:

  • Windows freezing during shutdown, resulting in a black screen.
  • Unexpected shutdowns even under light system load.
  • The display showing random snow before the login screen, followed by the system freezing after closing a game.

To resolve the issues, I planned to update the BIOS and perform a clean OS install. I updated the BIOS to version 2604, but after the update, the system froze at the yellow DRAM light and failed to boot. There was no power outage during the update, and the BIOS update itself completed successfully (as it had in previous attempts), but the system still wouldn’t boot.
I tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Clearing the CMOS.
  • Performing a BIOS flashback to the last known working version.
  • Testing with one stick of RAM.
  • Trying a known working RAM stick.
Unfortunately, none of these steps worked.

I ended up sending the motherboard for RMA, and they confirmed it was bricked. They sent me a brand-new replacement.

3. I’ve had no issues since receiving the replacement board, and I’ve clean-installed Windows 24H2. The motherboard shipped with BIOS version 1807. Given my previous experience, I’m hesitant to update the BIOS again. Should I update it regularly, or would it be better to stick with the current version?
If updates are recommended, which BIOS version would be the most stable for my build? Are there any critical or significant changes in the newer BIOS versions that could improve system stability, CPU health, voltage control, or help prevent overheating?

Thank you for taking the time to read through my questions. I appreciate any advice or insights you can offer.

Hello @ciiinaw

Thank you for reaching out to us.
Regarding the naming conventions for memory overclocking settings, we recommend referring to the table provided in How different DRAM types show on different platforms? for clarification: (XMP: Intel Extreme Memory Profile, EXPO: AMD EXtended Profiles for Overclocking, DOCP: Direct Over Clock Profile)

Additionally, please consult the relevant descriptions in the BIOS user guide:

When selecting memory modules, you may also refer to the specifications provided by the memory manufacturer. For example, with the F5-6400J3239G16GX2-TZ5RK model, the supported overclocking profiles are typically indicated:

As we currently lack details such as your product serial number or RMA number, we are unable to review your past repair or diagnostic history. If needed, kindly share the product serial number or RMA number with me via DM for further assistance.
Regarding your third question, in cases where there are no hardware changes or specific update requirements, we suggest remaining on a stable BIOS version and performing a clear CMOS to ensure optimal performance. If you require specific version updates or encounter unique use cases, please adjust according to your needs.

Thank you.

Due to the local holidays, my responses may be slightly delayed.
For any urgent cases, we recommend reaching out to your local service center for further assistance. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
