No Ethernet - ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI

I bought that motherboard last week and have been trying without success to get the Ethernet to work. It took me two days just to get Wifi to work. I have tried everything I could find on the Internet about this issue to no avail, and from what I've been reading here, I can see it's a very well known issue dating all the way back to 2012. It's my first ASUS mobo, all the others I've had have been Gigabyte which have all worked flawlessly. I would like to resolve the issue before I have to go back to Gigabyte, but things aren't looking promising. So I'm hoping someone here can help.

System Specs:

  • ASUS ROG STRIX B650 E-F Gaming Wifi
  • RYZEN 9 7900X
  • ASUS PROART Geforce GTX 4080 Super
  • Vengance 6400MHz RGB DDR5 4x32GB

What I've tried:

  • Turned off and on again my router at least a half dozen times.
  • Tried three different cables, two Cat 5's and a Cat 8
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled LAN drivers
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Ethernet from device manager
  • Updated to latest Bios - 2616 4/09/2024
  • Called ASUS tech support - they couldn't figure it out
  • Installed Armoury Crate, uninstalled LAN drivers and let Armory Crate install them
  • Reinstalled Windows 10
  • Tried everything above again
  • Installed Windows 11
  • Updated Armory Crate
  • Installed Updated Intel 1225_1226 LAN Driver to 2.1.3.15
  • Cursed a lot

And still no Ethernet. I really don't know what else to do except buy another mobo.

I just connected a USB-C Ethernet adapter and got instant connection. It's definitely a hardware issue. I'm calling it a faulty motherboard. But considering I don't use USB-C for anything on this PC, I'm leaving it as it is. It sucks when you spend so much money on something only to not have it work, especially considering this is a known issue. I am happy to be back up to speed but displeased in the product. If anything, this experience has taught me never to buy ASUS motherboards again.

Hi @JerryAtricks , I am sorry to hear about you troubles. It seems you have done a lot of troubleshooting already. Can you also let us know if you see any activity lights on the connector (RJ45) on the back of the motherboard where you plug in your ethernet cable? I am referring to https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/gaming-motherboards/no-ethernet-intel-i226-v-ethernet-adapter-not-work... post from @Jiaszzz_ROG where you started your discussion.

Also I noticed that the latest BIOS 2616 was released on 2024-05-24 but you have it last updated on 2024-04-29 and at that times this BIOS would not have come out unless you have a TYPO with the date in your message above.

Also what router/network device you are connecting your other end of the ethernet cable? One end goes into this motherboard, the other end goes into which device? What is the make and model of this device?

How good or comfortable are you with your WiFi network? If you are little bit savvy, did you log into your router/WiFi device as administrator and checked the logs. What is this device reporting when you connect the ethernet cable? Is it detecting that a device is connected to the ethernet port but failing to negotiate or no device detection is shown the system logs?

  • No, there are no lights on the back of the mobo where the cable connects nor on the router.

Also I noticed that the latest BIOS 2616 was released on 2024-05-24 but you have it last updated on 2024-04-29 and at that times this BIOS would not have come out unless you have a TYPO with the date in your message above.

  • Correct, that was a typo (fixed). However, the date on the ASUS website shows 04/09/2024 but the installed driver shows 06/29/2023.

Also what router/network device you are connecting your other end of the ethernet cable? One end goes into this motherboard, the other end goes into which device? What is the make and model of this device?

  • It's an AT&T router, model #5268ACFXN high speed Internet router, connected through their fiber optics.

  • I can follow instructions. Tell me where to go, what to do; I can do it.
  • I have not checked the logs on my router. I will do that tomorrow and advise.

  • I understand. I appreciate the help either way.

Hi @JerryAtricks since you see no electrical activity lights on the connector, it seems to be a hardware issue most likely. Since you have already tried with couple of cables, have you tried to use a different connector port on your AT&T router? Did you try to push or wiggle the cable into the connector on both sides just to make sure it is properly pushed into the ports on both sides and is making a good connection?

Yeah, I tried every port. I tried wiggling the cable. Nothing.

I am sorry to hear that you have a hardware issue with your board. I have not heard anyone else complaining about it for your board but I don't read every single post here. You can RMA the board if it is under warranty. I do get it that it is a very painful process to take every component out, ship it and wait for a long period of time to get it back. Plus the risk of customer service telling you that the issue is not covered under warranty. Since you bought the board last week, maybe you are in the return period to get a new board from the seller and return it as defective without going through the RMA pain.

I am glad you ultimately found a temporary solution for now. You have your WiFi as backup when needed in case you end up keeping this board and not exchanging it.

Thanks to @Jiaszzz_ROG to help you find the root cause of the issue. So ASUS customer support did help you figure out the problem.

I wish you all the best for whatever you decide to do next.

I won't be returning anything. That's too much down time and I need my PC for work.

@Jiaszzz_ROG didn't help me solve my issue, neither did ASUS customer support. I tried unsuccessfully for two days to get them back on the phone, but all I ever heard was their hold message. Btw, did you know they disconnect you after being on hold for 40 minutes?

You've been the only person to respond to this thread and offer any kind of assistance, @achugh, so thank you. I came across that other thread while searching for my issue, which was similar even though it was another model of mobo. I had already tried most of what was suggested in that thread by the time I got to it so the info in it wasn't really any help. Anyway, I'm considering the matter closed. If problems persist, I'll chalk it up to a loss and buy another mobo from another manufacturer. Thanks again.

Hello, @JerryAtricks

Regarding this thread, you marked the issue as resolved, but is this not actually the case?

Based on your description, you can correctly install the driver, and the Ethernet is recognized in Device Manager without any exclamation mark or error, but there is still no Ethernet connection.
May I ask did this problem occur right after building the PC, or did it appear after using it for a while or making specific software or hardware changes?
Besides the steps provided in [Motherboard] How to fix the cable network problems of Motherboard – Troubleshooting, including checking the Network Adapter, have you tried using the built-in network troubleshooter in Windows to diagnose the issue or checking for any error codes in the Event Manager?
After updating to the latest BIOS version 2616, did you clear CMOS and ensure that all LAN settings in the BIOS are correct, such as setting the Intel LAN Controller to [Enabled]?
Additionally, have you tried resetting the router, checking for firmware updates, or connecting the Ethernet directly to the modem instead of through the router?

Regarding this thread, you marked the issue as resolved, but is this not actually the case?

  • Correct. The original issue has not been resolved, but I was able to sidestep it using a USBC-to-Ethernet Adapter, which I have deemed as acceptable.

Based on your description, you can correctly install the driver, and the Ethernet is recognized in Device Manager without any exclamation mark or error, but there is still no Ethernet connection.

  • Correct

May I ask did this problem occur right after building the PC, or did it appear after using it for a while or making specific software or hardware changes?

  • It occurred from first power on after building it.

Besides the steps provided in [Motherboard] How to fix the cable network problems of Motherboard – Troubleshooting, including checking the Network Adapter, have you tried using the built-in network troubleshooter in Windows to diagnose the issue or checking for any error codes in the Event Manager?

  • I've tried that so many times I lost count and every time it keeps pointing to a bad cable. It's not the cable. The cable worked in a laptop. I also tried two other brand new cables which also did not work.
  • I have not tried looking for codes in the event manager. What specifically should I look for?

After updating to the latest BIOS version 2616, did you clear CMOS and ensure that all LAN settings in the BIOS are correct, such as setting the Intel LAN Controller to [Enabled]?

  • I have not cleared CMOS.
  • LAN setting in the BIOS is set to Enabled.

Additionally, have you tried resetting the router, checking for firmware updates, or connecting the Ethernet directly to the modem instead of through the router?

  • I've reset the router multiple times. No effect.
  • The router is the modem. It's a modem/router. There is no other connection between it and the cable that comes in from outside.
