Like the title suggests I am unable to get 5.1 surround output from my x870e hero.
When it’s 5.1 the rear speakers won’t work no matter what. When it’s 7.1 in sound settings I can get the rear speakers to work as the side speakers but when in games then there is zero output for anything behind me. Pretty frustrating/dissapointing that a $700 mobo doesn’t support a basic sound function when previous versions of the hero did.
I saw another post where the person solved their issue by manipulating the position of the pin in the jack. I tried every possible position with all 3 pins and still was unable to get actual 5.1 sound.
I thought, maybe it’s just my case that is the issue so I bought an external sound card. Still unable to get 5.1 sound but can get the same artificial and completely points “half” 7.1 output.
I tried manually setting every sound option in the Bios, still none of it worked.
I tried configuring the speakers in every single possible option in both windows settings and the Realtek configuration software.
I was advised to not “waste” my money on the x870e hero from Asus by several people. I disregarded their advice because I loved my z690 hero (particularly the extra usb ports, the 5.1 sound and the extra SSD slots).
Why is there no simple configuration option to change the location designation of the speakers? You can only select whether they actually exist or not.
Someone PLEASE help me find that I’m just missing something simple and Asus didn’t actually release the most expensive Mobo of this generation and take simple options away.

I think I read somewhere in the manual you have to use the front audio connection on the case front panel in combination with the mb connections in the back panel to use 5.1/7.1 if not using the optical output.
Edit: You can see it on page 35 in the manual.

Yeah, that’s where I started. In that scenario it only enables side and front speakers which is not actual 5.1 surround.

Using both mic and headset connectors on the front panel?

I have the Corsair 7000x case which has a combo headphone/mic jack in the front panel. I assumed this was the problem so I bought an external HD 5.1 sound card and I still have the same issue that it won't recognize the rear speakers as the actual rear speakers.

Hello @Kff523
As mentioned in the previous suggestion, page 35 of the ROG CROSSHAIR X870E HERO user manual indicates that in a 5.1-channel configuration, the ports on the rear I/O panel of the motherboard are designated as "Front Speaker Out" and "Center/Subwoofer," and the "Rear Speaker Out" is intended to be connected via the MIC IN port on the front panel.
This means that, regardless of whether you are using a 2, 4, 5.1, or 7.1 channel configuration, the rear I/O panel ports cannot be used for rear speaker output.
Thank you.

Yeah, my front L/R, center and subwoofer all work fine but no matter where I plug the rear speakers I can’t get just 5.1. 5.1 produces no sound and 7.1 makes the rear speakers produce on the side 7.1 speaker output. This is true with both the front jack and my external USB HD 5.1 sound card.

Hello @Kff523
Thank you for your response. To assist in clarifying the issue, may I kindly request the following information:
- the brand and model of the speakers you are currently using, as well as whether the connection cable is the original one included with the speakers.
Have you tested the speakers with a different set of cables or tried cross-testing with other speakers?
- the current BIOS version and the images of manually adjusting items in BIOS, or whether it is the default
- the PSU, RAM model and part number, and two .txt files generated in your Windows system via the steps below:
1) Press WIN + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog, and type dxdiag → click OK.
2) Click Save All Information and select a save location → click Save.
3) Repeat the same steps with msinfo32 to generate the second file.
- a complete video recording of the issue, including the following: confirmation of the speaker's connection to each audio port, the corresponding settings and adjustments in the Windows sound settings and Realtek Audio Manager, and the actual output behavior of each channel during a test sound playback (please also provide the source of the test sound).
Additionally, we have noted that your chassis audio interface seems to be a combination jack. However, to support 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound on the X870E HERO, the front panel has separate audio output and microphone ports. Could you kindly confirm if you have the opportunity to test with a different chassis to further investigate this issue?
Thank you.

Hello @Warrene
Thank you for joining the discussion.
If possible, could you kindly refer to the requested hardware and software information, scenario details, and video documentation mentioned above, and share them with us?

I have the exact same issue with my ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI. Sure would be nice if there was some actual support with this problem. It does not seem to be a rare issue from what I've been seeing on the internet.
