Hello,
I have just build my new computer containing a ROG STRIX B650-A GAMING WIFI, and I booted it up for the first time. One of the things I install is a PC speaker. And what I got when booting up, was a tone coded message: 1 long tone followed by 3 short tones. According to the manual, this board used an AMI BIOS. When I searched the AMI code I received, it told me this: "Conventional/Extended memory failure (Graphics card is out of order)."
Upon finding this board, I found a similar message from someone with kind of the same issue; no VGA detected after BIOS update. I have seen a reply to that message and I can provide the following information:
- I have installed two M.2 NVME SSD's: one AData 1000GB in the top most slot (to be used for OS), one Lexar 4000GB in the middle slot (for data)
- AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4090 White OC Edition -24GB GDDR6X - PCIe 4.0, Corsair DDR5 Vengeance RGB 4x16GB 6000 White (All banks used), Corsair RM1000x PSU.
- No extensions are used, besides the adapter delivered with the GPU.
- The LEDs on the mainboard are as follows after the tone message: CPU (red) is off, DRAM (yellow) is off, VGA (white) is on and Boot (green) is on.
I tried the following to get the GPU to be detected:
- Other PSU: Corsair RM850e (same result)
- Other riser cable: Lian-Li 600mm & Lian-Li 900mm (same result)
- Other GPU from other computer with both riser cables (same result)
- Other GPU: same result (not detected)
- Less RAM in second and fourth bank: same result (not detected)
- Both riser cables in the other PC: PC boots normally
I'm at my wit's end and am wondering if anyone has any idea what I missed?
Update 17 October:
I did some more testing today and both CPU and GPU are worrking correctly when plugged into a different mainboard (MSI MAG B650 Tomohawk WiFi). The setup boots perfectly well and show me the BIOS screen. I tried this with a just the used CPU (mentioned above) and a different GPU, the used CPU and the used GPU (also mentioned above) and both times the GPU was directly seated into the mainboard. I also used the above mentioned riser cable of 900mm from Lian-Li and also then the setup boots into the BIOS screen.
It just doesn't seem to work with the ROG STRIX B650-A Gaming WiFi. Also not after updating the BIOS to the last stable version.
All this has me inclined that the mainboard has some sort of defect on it. Is there anything else I could try?

Yesterday I received the mainboard after repairs. I was fairly busy yesterday, so I could not test the board until today (I also needed to drain another system to get my other 7800X3D). I put in two sticks of RAM (2x16GB in banks a_2 and b_2 as per the manual), I placed the CPU and connected a RT 7900 XTX directly in the top PCIe slot of the mainboard. I switched the setup on and I got the same code as before (1 long tone followed by 3 short tones).
I then decided to connect a DisplayPort cable directly to the mainboard (The CPU has integrated Graphics). I rebooted the setup and, low and behold, the boot was successful. The POST-beep (single short beep) was not followed by another tone code.
After some research, it seems some BIOS' give the same error message when there is no monitor connected. This is an actual bug in the BIOS, not a failure of the user or the hardware connected or produced. The BIOS should boot and not give a message (including an incorrect one) when no monitor is connected. It results in confusion with the user.
All in all I'm happy that this now works. I would like to provide the feedback with regards to the BIOS tone code and would love to see this corrected in a future BIOS version.

Hello @Chris_Oostveen
Thank you for reaching out to us.
Based on your description, could you please clarify what "the adapter delivered with the GPU" refers to?
The beeping pattern of one long and three short beeps, according to the FAQ, indicates a potential issue with the GPU, possibly due to insufficient power.
We recommend avoiding the use of adapters and instead installing the GPU directly into the PCIe slot to check if the system boots properly and also ensure the power cables are connected according to the specifications.
As for the white and green Q-LEDs light on, we suggest reviewing the [Motherboard] ASUS motherboard troubleshooting via Q-LED indicators guide and rechecking the GPU and boot drive installations.
With that in mind, we recommend testing with a minimal setup: remove the chassis and install only the CPU (check for any bent pins), a single RAM stick in the DIMM_A2 slot, one GPU directly in the PCIEX16_1 slot, and the PSU to see if the system can successfully boot into the BIOS.
If no display appears even after cross-testing another GPU or the other PCIe slot with this setup, please consider contacting the reseller for further after-sales support.
Thank you.

Hello @Jiaszzz_ROG,
Thank you very much for your reaction.
With the adapter delivered with the GPU, I mean the short cable that goes from a 12VHPWR connector to four 8-pin PCIe connectors. It looks a bit like this.
I already sent the board back to the seller and they reported that there has been some CPU socket damage. Somehow I completely missed that. They're going to try and have it repaired at the producer of the board. Lets see if that works. If not, I will try what you suggested. That could take up to 15 working days. I'll let it know when I know more or have tried it.

Hello @Chris_Oostveen
Thank you for providing updates on your issue, and we're glad to hear that the problem has been successfully resolved.
Additionally, as a general note, when there is no monitor connected, it's expected for the VGA Q-LED indicator to light up or for other error prompts to appear, and for the system to fail to boot in such cases.
If you encounter any further difficulties or have any concerns, please feel free to PM me anytime.
Thank you.

Hello,
I wonder why the BIOS would give an error when no display device is connected to the Video Graphics Array (VGA card)? I am merely curious about the reasoning behind giving an error in this situation, as it is, in my opinion, not really necessary.
Thanks.
